Bears 2001 Free Agents
Chicago has 24 players prepared for free agency heading into the 2001 offseason. Of the 24, 14 are unrestricted, four are restricted and six are exclusive. Unrestricted free agents have the right to sign with any franchise, while the Bears have the opportunity to match any offer to a restricted free agent, or receive compensation, as long as there is a tendered offer. Exclusive free agents may negotiate only with their current team.

Unrestricted Free Agents - Players with four or more years of NFL experience. They can sign with their own team or any other team in the NFL. If they leave their previous team, the team that signs them can do so without having to award the previous team compensation. Restricted Free Agents - Players with three years of NFL experience, they are free to negotiate with any team. However, the current team has the right to match any offer and retain the rights to the player. If the offer is not matched the player is free to sign with the other team, but the new team must give the old team compensation in the form of draft picks. Exclusive Free Agents - Players with two or fewer years of experience who have no outside negotiating power. Their rights belong to their present club provided they are made a minimum qualifying offer. |
