HAVE A NICE DAY

Welcome to my Chicago Bears---BEARS PICK QB CADE MCNOWN FROM UCLA IN FIRST ROUND OF THE DRAFT-----BEAR DOWN!!!!!
Last Updated: Thursday, April 29, 1999 11:07 AM EST

Rex Tucker
OL | (6-4 3/4, 303, 5.18) |
Drafted by: Chicago, Pick 5, Round 3 , Overall 66
by Pro Football Weekly
chi

Notes: Younger brother of former Texas Christian All-America C Ryan Tucker, who now plays for the Rams. Rex was a backup center in 1995 as a true freshman. Was the team's second-unit left tackle in '96. Started three games at left tackle in '97 and every game there in '98.

Positives: Good height. Has added weight and strength. Versatile. Can play center and guard. Runs well and is athletic. Has quick feet and good agility. A worker. Has gotten bigger, stronger and better every year.

Negatives: Not as big, physical and massive as scouts would like. Still lacks playing strength. A lot like John Michels (USC), who still has not established himself with the Packers. Lacks experience. Started only one year. Does not knock people off the ball or dominate.

Summary: Playing strength will be the key because, athletically, he has the height, feet and mobility.

D'Wayne Bates
WR | (6-1 3/4, 215, 4.55) | Northwestern
Drafted by: Chicago, Pick 10, Round 3 , Overall 71
by Pro Football Weekly
chi

Notes: Top option quarterback and baseball player in high school. Was drafted by the Blue Jays out of high school but chose Northwestern, where he redshirted in 1994. Came into his own in '95, starting every game and catching 49 passes for 889 yards and five touchdowns. Also returned 11 kickoffs for 260 yards. All Big-Ten wide receiver and a Biletnikoff Award finalist in '96, when he caught 75-1,196-12 and returned 11 kickoffs for 231 yards. Suffered a broken bone in his left foot in the spring of '97 and then, in the first game that fall, suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee (broken bone in his right lower leg and complete tear of the tibia-fibula ligament). Reinjured and rebroke the same bone in his foot in the spring of '98 and had surgery that April. Came back in the fall and, after a slow start, caught 83-1,245-9 and returned 15 punts for 109 yards. Made one very special play in the Ohio State game, with his best work coming after the catch.

Positives: All-around athlete. Excellent size. Very strong for a receiver. Has good playing speed. Fine athlete. Good body control. Adjusts to the ball nicely. Versatile. Can catch, run with the ball, return kickoffs, throw the ball and run the option offense in goalline and short-yardage situations. Generally catches the ball well. Can catch the poorly thrown pass and can be a good blocker when he wants to be.

Negatives: Has had a lot of injury problems. Strider who may be more fast than quick. Lacks suddenness. Is just average coming off the line. Lacks a quick, explosive burst into and out of his breaks. Does not always give great effort when blocking. Has too many drops for a player with his ability because, at times, he gets anxious and will start to run with the ball before he has it.

Summary: A big, athletic wide receiver who can be physical. Is one of the top handful of receivers in the draft, provided he stays healthy.

Marty Booker
WR | (5-11 3/4, 214, 4.65) | Northeast Louisiana
Drafted by: Chicago, Pick 17, Round 3 , Overall 78
by Pro Football Weekly
chi

Notes: High-school quarterback and track star. Worked at quarterback while redshirting in 1994 and in the spring of '95 but moved to wide receiver in the fall. Started one game when Stepfret Williams was out in '95. Booker ended the year with eight catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. Started the past three years. Caught 51-857-6 in '96, 44-621-5 in '97 and 75-1,168-11 in '98.

Positives: Big hands and long arms. Built along the lines of Sterling Sharpe. Is so thick and wide that defensive backs have a hard time getting their arms around him, allowing him to really use his size against them. Can make the tough catch.

Negatives: Does not always play with a sense of urgency. Will get lazy at times if he is not the primary receiver. Seems to lose concentration and focus. Can be erratic catching and will drop some. At the Scouting Combine, Booker did not run nearly as fast as he previously had run. He also weighed in at a husky 214 pounds.

Summary: Has the size, speed and skills to compete for a job but must regain the speed he once had and pay more attention to detail.

Warrick Holdman
LB | (6-1 1/8, 234, 4.71) | Texas A&M
Drafted by: Chicago, Pick 11, Round 4 , Overall 106
by Pro Football Weekly
chi

Notes:High-school All-American. Was a starter from midway through his freshman year until he hurt his ankle near the end of the season. Has started for the past three years. Earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 1997 and first-team accolades in '98. Had 44 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, no interceptions and two passes broken up in '95, 73-9-2 1/2-0-3 in '96, 81-13-5-0-3 in '97 and 95-16-7-1-8 in '98.

Positives: Very good athlete. Well-built. Quick and agile with some explosive qualities. Has quick hands and feet. Has really improved over the past year and became much more of a play maker. Is doing a much better job of getting off blocks now and is much more instinctive than he appeared to be earlier in his career. Made a nice one-handed interception in '98.

Negatives: Undersized player who is often used more as a pass-rushing defensive end than as a linebacker. Has only limited experience in coverage. Is too small to play head-up over a tight end. Has not always been the hardest worker in the world.

Summary: Has a future in the NFL if he continues to improve and works hard.

Rosevelt Colvin
DL | (6-2 ¼, 252, 4.85) | Purdue
Drafted by: Chicago, Pick 16, Round 4 , Overall 111
by Pro Football Weekly
chi

Notes: Recruited as a linebacker but was moved to end because he lacked great speed for linebacker and the team needed help up front. Played in the last nine games of the season as a freshman. A starter for the past three years. Was second-team All-Big Ten in 1997, when he had 71 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 12 1/2 sacks. Named team MVP and earned All-Big Ten honors in '98 after making 45 stops, 19 tackles for loss and 13 sacks, intercepting a pass and blocking three kicks.

Positives: Has a knack for rushing the passer and making plays. Very, very quick out of the blocks. Has a little wide burst and a nice counter move.

Negatives: Undersized. Is not effective when teams run at him and will get blown out at times. Can be mauled on running downs. Does not have great speed.

Summary: Is too small and is neither fast nor athletic enough for his size, but Colvin has a great knack for making plays.

Jerry Wisne
OL | (6-6, 306, 5.25) | Notre Dame
Drafted by: Chicago, Pick 10, Round 5 , Overall 143
by Pro Football Weekly
chi

Notes: Played in only the opener in 1995 but turned down a chance to apply for a redshirt year. Played in nine games and started three in '96. Started every game in '97 and the first nine games in '98 before injuring his right medial collateral ligament in the Navy game.

Positives: Above-average size. Can punch with his hands. Has started for almost two years.

Negatives: After coming on late in '97, did not seem to continue to improve in '98. Gets too tall when pass-blocking and does not anchor very well. Gets top-heavy because he plays too upright. Just average blocking on the second level.

Summary: Should have tried to get another year of eligibility. His senior year is not a great résumé for the NFL.
