The year 1996 was a busy one for Brenda so please bear with the length of these pages...
1996 started with Brenda finally managing to break through Sonny's armor. Kissing passionately in the parking lot of Luke's they were interrupted by Lily. Deciding to go upstairs, Sonny was stopped by the police who arrested him. Brenda visited him in jail and told him that she would stand by him no matter what. Lily, fearing that Sonny and Brenda had reunited, called her father for help. Telling him how much she loved Sonny, she asked him to get Sonny out of jail. Rivera agreed to post Sonny's bail for Lily's sake then told Sonny that he would make sure that the charges against Sonny would be dropped if he married Lily. After much soul-searching, Sonny decided to marry Lily, exchanging one type of loss of freedom for another. Going to see Brenda, Sonny told her that in order to have his freedom, he would have to sacrifice his personal life and their future together. Sonny then told Brenda that he loved her and that he always had. He then left a devastated Brenda.
Brenda, learning of Sonny's engagement to Lily, figured out the deal he had made to stay out of jail. Rivera sent Lily her mother's wedding dress. When Brenda found out the dress was at Kelly's, she sneaked into Lily's room to see it. The power went out as she stood looking at it, and trying to light a candle, Brenda accidently set the dress on fire. Brenda tried to convince everyone that she didnt do it on purpose but no one quite believed her. After purchasing a new gown, Sonny and Lily got married as a heart-broken Brenda watched. While Sonny and Lily were on their honeymoon, some good things finally started happening for Brenda and Lois. Contacting Jasper "Jax" Jacks, a coporate raider, Lois convinced him to help her. Together, they
forced Edward to trade L&B Records for a company that Edward was desperately trying to buy. After the deal, Jax decided he really liked Lois and stuck around to see if he could win her heart. A
jealous and worried Ned asked Brenda to distract Jax's attention away from Lois. When Jax met Brenda, he was instantly attracted and interested but continued to pursue Lois as well.
Brenda intrigued Jax, so he agreed to escort Brenda to Eddie's concert at Luke's. Sonny, seeing them together, could not hide his anger at the sight. Jax took Brenda for a ride in his plane, then later at Luke's they discussed flying to Ireland. Sonny, learning about the trip, confronted Brenda and demanded to know what was going on between her and Jax. Brenda taunted Sonny with images of her and Jax making love and when they argued she missed her flight. Later, Sonny went to Jax and warned him to stay away from Brenda and Lois. An angry Brenda yelled at Sonny for interfering in her life and then told Lily to keep her husband out of Brenda's business. Jax admited that he knew that Brenda was using him to make Sonny jealous but that he didnt care because he liked her. And he liked flaunting his relationship with Brenda in front of Sonny.
At a Ward House benefit at Luke's, Sonny could not stop himself from thinking about Brenda. Brenda arrived, and suddenly, a speeding car ran into her and sped off. A seriously injured Brenda was taken to the emergency room at General Hospital where her heart stoped but the doctors were able to revive her. Sonny, after checking on Brenda, called a meeting with Rivera, who warned him that next time Brenda might not be so lucky. In ICU, Brenda had a near-death experience involving Sonny. But when she woke up, she found Jax by her side. Sonny continued to secretly visit Brenda, and was seen by Jax. Brenda was disappointed to learn that she missed Sonny's visits. After being released from the hospital, Jax offered to take Brenda to Los Angeles to get her mind off of Sonny and off of the accident. Brenda agreed and Jax flew her to sunny California for several fun-filled days. As their friendship deepened, Jax kissed her, but Brenda pulled back. Neither Sonny nor Brenda could stop thinking about the other.
