When Brenda overheard Lily talking about an upcoming ski trip, she convinced Jax to take her skiing, not telling him that Sonny would be there too. Jax, thinking that this meant that Brenda wanted to spend more time with him, got very upset when they ran into Sonny and Lily. He told Brenda off and then went home. Later, Brenda went skiing and contrivied to get seperated from the group when a snowstorm hits. A worried Sonny set out to find her. Getting extremely cold, Brenda set out to find some shelter when she came across an abandoned cabin and managed to break in. Sonny finally spotted the cabin and was relieved to find Brenda inside. But realizing that Brenda had set this up, he got angry and started to leave. The two fought and Brenda stormed out. Sonny started to go after her when an avalanche buried her. Sonny frantically began digging her out and finally reached her, unconscious. Sonny finally revieved her, with only a severely injured ankle. Meanwhile, a frantic Lily called Jax, who told her he was on his way. Back at the cabin, trying to keep warm, Brenda and Sonny started reminiscing about their past. Caught up in the moment, they kissed and made peace.
At that moment, a rescue helicopter arrived but Brenda didnt want to leave. A tense moment came when Jax and Lily came face-to-face with Sonny and Brenda, as he carried her out of the cabin, calling for a doctor to help Brenda. Jax took Brenda from Sonny and carried her to the helicopter, and told her "its alright, you're safe now." Back in Port Charles, a hurt Jax hid his feelings from Brenda when she tried to make up with him. Later, Jax decided to leave town rather than be second to Sonny in Brenda's heart. In an unexpected move, Jax visited Brenda and asked her to marry him. He told her he was leaving and would return in two weeks for her answer and that if she decided not to marry him, then he would leave town for good. Brenda was stunned at his ultimatium.
Brenda convinced Sonny to meet her at the docks. Desperate to be with Sonny any way she could, Brenda offered to be Sonny's mistress. Lily, after seeing the two embrace, confided in Harry that she didnt think Sonny would ever get over Brenda. Harry called Rivera with this news and Rivera showed up in Port Charles. After pulling Brenda into his limo, he warned her to stay away from Sonny or else. He mentioned the car that had hit her and, terrified, Brenda realized that it had been no accident. After much thinking, Sonny told an elated Brenda that he was going to leave Lily, but warned her about how much danger they would be in once he did so. Brenda told Sonny that she didnt care as long as they were together. Sonny then went home, and as he started to tell Lily, she told Sonny she was pregnant. Meeting Brenda at the docks again, he told her about Lily's pregnancy. A devestated Brenda told Sonny to go back to Lily and "make it worth it." Sonny begged Lily not to go home to Puerto Rico and convinced her that he wanted to raise their child together. Happily, Lily agreed and together they headed to Luke's to celebrate.
At the same time, Jax returned to town to get Brenda's answer and found a vulnerable Brenda in despair. Seeking comfort, they made love. Realizing that she and Sonny could never be together now, Brenda made the decision to get on with her life and accepted Jax's marriage proposal. Jax took Brenda to his yacht where they were married. At the same time, at Luke's, Lily went to get the car, while Sonny said his goodnights. As she turned the key, the car exploded, killing Lily instantly. While Sonny tried to deal with his grief, Brenda and Jax visited Jax's family. After winning over both his mom and dad, Brenda told Jax she was ready to go home. Once back in Port Charles, Brenda and Jax announced their marriage to a stunned Lois and Ned. Then Lois broke the news of Lily's death. Brenda rushed to Sonny's side and tried to comfort him, but was stunned to see how much he really loved Lily.
At the Nurses Ball, Sonny found out that Brenda had married Jax. Later, Brenda went to Sonny's, wanting to offer comfort to him. Sonny told her how Lily died and Brenda was horrified to learn that Lily had died because of them. Brenda and Sonny started kissing but Brenda pulled back when she saw her wedding ring. Sonny told her he had nothing to give her anymore. The next day, Brenda told Robin that after talking to Sonny she had realized just how much she cared about him, meaning Jax. But Jax, who had overheard, thought she was talking about Sonny.
