Colonel, Field Artillery

Colonel John M. Pickler was born on 14 March 1943 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from the United States Military Academy and commissioned in the Field Artillery in June 1965.

Initially assigned to the 5th Battalion (Airborne) 81st Field Artillery (105mm Towed) in Wiesbaden, Germany, Colonel Picker served in a series of battery level positions. Following a brief tour as a company training and battalion operations officer in a basic combat training battalion at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he was transferred to Vietnam in 1967 where he was a battalion fire support officer and then commanded Battery C, 2d Battalion, 19th Field Artillery (105mm Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division.

In 1968, Colonel Pickler embarked on a series of military and civilian academic assignments beginning with the Field Artillery Officer Advanced Course in 1968-69. Next, he was graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville with a Master of Science in Physics; this was followed by a three year tour as instructor and assistant professor in the Department of Physics at West Point. Finally, he attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1974-75.

Returning to the field Army, Colonel Pickler served as the S3, 528th US Army Artillery Group in Turkey. Reassigned to the 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, he was S3 of the 1st Battalion, 13th Field Artillery (155 Towed/8 inch SP) and Secretary of the General Staff during the period 1976-78. Following an assignment as Executive Assistant to te Director, Defense Nuclear Agency, Colonel Picker commanded the 2d Battalion, 81st Field Artillery (155mm SP) from January 1980 until June 8, 1982, and was then Inspector General until June 1983 in the 8th Infantry Division (Mechanized). As an Army War College student, he was an Advanced Operational Studies Fellow at the Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth. Before returning to the 8th Division, Colonel Pickler served as the Chief of Staff, III Corps Artillery, 1984-86, and Director of Plans, Training and Mobilization, 1986-87, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Colonel Pickler's decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device, and the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Colonel Pickler and his wife Karen have three children: Nevelyn, 19, a sophomore at Middle Tennessee State University; Andy, 17, a high school senior; and Jeffrey, 8, a third grader.
