This scene from the battle of Trafalgar took allot of research using plans of the vessels from the London Maritime Museum and Museo Naval, Madrid. I’ve also studied the diaries and accounts of those who were actually there, so that I could visualise the scene through their eyes.
The painting depicts HMS Royal Sovereign rubbing the starboard side of the Santa Ana. Meanwhile, astern of the Sovereign, HMS Bellisle is rammed amidships by the French Fougueux.
