The flavor of the kingdom, and the current campaign in general, is Celtic, mixing Irish, Scottish, and Welsh influences and overlaid with a medieval European feudal structure for the government. The climate and terrain are northern temperate/southern sub-arctic forested foothills and glens similar to the Scottish Highlands. I used the World Builder's Guidebook from Wizards/TSR to help me in creating the world in general and the kingdom in particular. I plan on running a mixture of AD&D modules and adventures of my own devising. I hope to tell my player characters' tales without gamespeak, however.
This is the history my players started with for the area. It's basic with not many details, but that's about what an average person would know.
Here is a map of the Kingdom of Caermor. The eight Duchies of the kingdom are marked.
Here is a map of the starting playing area for the characters. The town of BoghaMor is at the base of Kendall Keep (of Keep on the Borderlands fame -- though altered a bit to fit into the kingdom). The map shows an area approximately 50 miles wide (east to west) and a little over 30 miles long (north to south). The area shown is a few miles south of the northern border and several leagues from the eastern border of the kingdom. The map does not show it well, but the Keep guards the largest pass through the rugged foothills, and hence the one most invaders try to use. The Marquess Brandubh of Mhearaig held the pass for two weeks against an Orc Horde in the tens of thousands with just two thousand men.
Here is the cast of player characters:
The characters begin their profession at a time when the kingdom is ruled by a monarch who means well, but who does not exert his authority at all. Bandits and brigands are becoming more prevalent, and there are reports of the Formorii stirring up trouble. Some of the Dukes are eyeing the throne, others are wondering if the old days of the Clans might be better.
