Looking almost too big to be real, rocs are huge birds of prey that dwell in warm mountainous regions and are known for carrying off large animals (cattle, horses, elephants) for food. Believe it or not, some evil wizards or priests have been able to animate the dead carcasses of these huge creatures to serve as undead transport.

Rottin' rocs once resembled large eagles, with either dark brown plumage or all golden feathers from head to tail. In their undeath state, they may be missing feathers or even enire wings. The magic that animates the rottin' rocs also allows them to fly even though they may have incomplete wings. These giant undead birds are 60 feet long from beak to tail feathers, with wingspans as wide as 120 feet.

Combat: The rottin' roc can still swoop down upon prey, seize it in powerful talons, and carry it off, though in its undead state it must becommanded to do so. The resulting damage is 3d6 per claw. Theyw ill attempt to carry away their prey even if they only hit with one claw. If the creature resists, the rottin' roc can strike with its beak, inflicting 4d6 points of damage per hit.

Should a human, humanoid, or demihuman be captured, there is a 65% chance that the victim's arms are both pinned to his sides, making impossible melee weapon attacks or spellcasting that requires hand gestures. A rottin' roc will never let go of its prey unless commanded to do so by its creator (or rider if that power is transferred by the creator). A rottin' roc can pick up two targets simultaneously if they are within 10 feet of each other.

A rottin' roc usually cruises at lower heights than their living couterparts, usually depending on the sight of the rider or controlled.

Habitat/Society: Roc lairs are vast nests made of trees, branches, and the like. They inhabit the highest mountains in warm regions. Rottin' rocs are usually found in these areas though they do not require or desire nests. A few (15%) inhabit their own former nests and may have some treasure, the residue of victims gone by. If the roc had been seizing pack horses and mules, some of that treasure may be merchant's wares such as spices, rugs, tapestries, perfume, rich clothing, or jewels.

Ecology: Rottin' rocs are not natural creations and have no role in ecology or nature.
