The use of medicinal herbs and plants in the treatment of common, and sometimes uncommon, ailments is universal. Every culture has passed down this art, whether Arabic or Celtic or Chinese, through written or oral traditions. In fact, orthodox medicine was originally a matter of combining and using powdered forms of plants and/or animals to achieve results that are now derived from synthetic drugs. It's because of the side effects on many of these drugs that I originally became interested in herbal remedies, aromatherapy and homeopathic medicine.
This is, by no means, a replacement of good medical care, but an alternative way to treat some of the more common ailments. Talk to your family health care provider about more natural alternatives, but always be aware of the chance of allergic reaction.
