United Federation of Planets...
Starfleet's Prime Directive is founded on this conviction and states unequivocally
that no Federation personnel may
interfere with the normal development of any culture. As a result of this
policy, newly encountered races have quickly
gained confidence in the Federation. This confidence has done much, throughout
Federation history; to tear down
the natural uneasiness and apprehension felt by the many alien cultures
the Federation has encountered, allowing
them to join, with trust, the Federation’s growing body of member worlds.
However, the Federation has not granted membership to all the encountered
races. This is as to the fact that
many worlds are inhabited by primitive civilizations, both spiritually
and technologically, which are often unaware
of interstellar life. Nevertheless, the growth and evolution of these particular
civilizations is closely watched and
followed by the Federation, in order to officially make first contact once
the appointed time comes for them to
become member worlds.
Other cultures, which have already realized the existence of other life
in the universe, have chosen to remain
completely isolated and independent, and other worlds are hostile toward
the Federation, resulting in the ever
present threat of interstellar conflict.
The United Federation of Planets is located on the Alpha and Beta Quadrants of the Milky Way galaxy.
Federation Starfleet
Starfleet is an interstellar-operating branch of the United Federation
of Planets. It carries out a wide variety
of missions, which include deep-space exploration, scientific advancement
and the establishment of diplomatic
relations with other races. It also serves as a defensive agency, doing
battle, when necessary, in providing safety
for the Federation member worlds and its citizens. Additionally, Starfleet
is in charge of designing, building and
producing 43 percent of the Federation interstellar fleet, totalling over
2,500 starships. Starfleet also maintains a
far-flung network of starbases to support deep-space operations. These
starbases or outposts are strategically
posted throughout the Federation’s defined space. They are responsible
for sector security and stellar emergency
assistance, and they also serve as complete maintenance and refitting depots
for starships and medical facilities
for those in need.
Starfleet starbases also coordinate galactic communication, initiate new
research activity, and provide welcome
shore leave for space-weary starship crews.
