When writing, be polite and firm with your opinions. Be sure to praise the show, say how long you've been watching it, and how upset you are about hearing that it is being cancelled. A suck-up tactic that was used by a Sliders fan (which eventually ended up on SFC) was to tell them all the other shows on SFC that you watch, and to threaten to stop watching SFC, because then your vote becomes a lot more valuable. I think both the Canadian fans and the American fans can be of help to each other--YTV fans can mail SFC and YTV, and vice-versa--and be sure not to tell them you don't watch it from YTV/SFC, or else they won't really care. =D Handwritten or typed is fine, although handwritten will definitely raise eyebrows about the time spent on it; typed looks more business-y.
Another thing--if we are successful, SFC will most likely look at MG and ask, "Why didn't it work before?" They'll most likely change what they think is wrong with it--even if we think that aspect is fine; so in your letter, you should include that you think the show would be fine with no major changes, because they'll be tempted to micro-manage. If they see that the fans think the show is fine, they might just leave it alone.
This is the code to put on your page--copy and paste it to the page you think it would get the most exposure [I've made it so that you don't need to upload the image]:
One thing about this whole thing that I should clear up right now is that this is a plea for more NEW episodes--SFC plans to keep the show running in reruns to milk every possible penny from the show that they can, and YTV and SFE are probably doing the same (although I don't see the point of SFE running it at 4:15 in the morning). This whole campaign is to make sure it doesn't stop rerunning (because something is always better than nothing) and to get new episodes are made (because something NEW can be better than something old =D).
The key lies in the letters--if there is enough support for the show, and it looks like SFC would really lose something by not continuing it, SFC could be prompted to renew it. I have no previous experience dealing with YTV, but they seem reasonable enough not to demand too many changes in the show, and they seem fair enough with their fans to renew it if there is enough support.
Why would they stop production of the show, you wonder? Easy--SFC didn't think it was getting enough ratings. The point of the letters is to convince them that more ratings are on the way, but only if there are new episodes.
One more thing--make sure to bookmark the news page for new developments on this fight.
