The Colossi of Memnon
On the way to Deir el-Bahri and the Valley
of the Kings, on the right side of the road, are two giant, seated
colossi made to resemble Amenophis III.
Once they flanked the entrance to a great,
mortuary temple built in the 14th century BCE, but that crumbled
in an earthquake that struck in 27 BCE. The quake cracked the
statues from their shoulders to their hips, and ever thereafter
they were heard to "sing" when the Sun rose in the
morning.
The story goes that the Greeks thought this
place a good place to augur from, and the "Oracle of Memnon"
was instituted here. Unfortunately, the Emperor Septimus Severus
had the statues restored to try and curry favor with Memnon,
and they stopped singing after that.
Which just goes to show: if it ain't broke,
don't fix it.
