That said, on to the review!

Title: Donor
Author: Charles Wilson
Publisher: St. Martin's Paperbacks
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1999

"Mainstream" fiction is something I rarely indulge in...to my loss. But Embryo was an enjoyable medical thriller, and Charles Wilson's Donor seems cut from the same cloth of fine and masterful writing. I accepted his offer of reviewing the book, and enjoyed nearly every moment of it!

Aging is a part of life. So is death. But there are those out there determined to cheat death no matter what the price might be. One such is Jonathan Waverly, wealthy corporate mogul willing to pull any and all strings to get the funding he needs to seek out ways to grow older without suffering from the natural deterioration of his physical body. To that end he's willing to manipulate and use anyone that could possibly help him, from psychopathic mental ward patients to doctors (at a hospital he sponsors) to soon-to-be United States Congressmen. But has he gone too far, this time manipulating Dr. Michael Sims and attorney Shannon Donnelly?

There have been news reports and undercover specials about patients going under the knife and waking up with something missing other than what was supposed to be removed, or organs missing that had nothing to do with the purpose of the operation. Charles Wilson has done a masterful job of postulating a disturbingly possible, well-thought, well-organized plan that sufficient funds would allow something far, far worse to take place!

Donor is vastly different from the other Charles Wilson novels I've reviewed, but I guarantee you'll enjoy reading it. The language is smooth-flowing and easy to follow, not laden down with medical terminology or attorney lingo or the like. Donor hits bookstores in the beginning of November '99. Watch for it!

Rating: Thumbs up! Can medical science beat death? Only if human nature doesn't win out over stubborn desperation!
