Title: Sorceress of Darshiva
Author: David Eddings
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1989

Garion and his companions, always one step behind Zandramas in their search for Garion's kidnapped son, have other matters to occupy their attention, including a need to be in certain places at the right time and especially one particular place at a very important time. However, they have no idea where the "Place Which Is No More" is, and some of the few clues available to them lie in the writings of an insane god. And while Zandramas--and a few other contenders for the final prize--have the writings in hand, Garion needs to find a copy of his own. The answer lies in distant Melcena, but first Garion needs to get there from the main continent. And with the forces of Kal Zakath after them--not to mention and obstacles Zandramas has thrown in his path--it may be easier said than done. But time is running out, their party is yet one short, and Zandramas has a huge lead over them. Will they find the information they need in time...or will all their efforts be for naught?

Sorceress of Darshiva is the fourth volume in The Mallorean and it is obvious from the increasing impetus and excitement that the saga is steadily nearing its conclusion. Not that that's a bad thing, though. It has a long way to go yet, and in the meantime we get to watch as Garion and his companions take step after meticulous and careful step towards their final goal and destination. And with each step fraught with danger, the novel remains as captivating as ever.

Of particular interest to me were the scenes at the University of Melcena. Now, I wasn't really involved in the physical sciences, but some of the images the author concocts were classic! I mean, I can imagine how some researchers--alchemists in this case--were as likely as not to blow themselves up (or their laboratories, at least) while searching for new solutions to old problems and situations, like turning lead to gold. And some of the things about research and "collections" and libraries made absolute sense to me. Of course, having passed through college, I can of course better visualize what it was all about than when I was in high school, but that's neither here nor there now, is it? But like I said, classic!

Well, at the ending of Sorceress of Darshiva I'm now primed and ready to plunge on to the end. Everything's coming to a head, and I can't wait to get to the grand finale of the novel. Will Garion recover his son? Will a new dark God of Angarak arise? Will Zandramas become the Bride of the Child of Dark? And where is the Place Which Is No More? All the answers are forthcoming, so read this novel and prepare for the last!

Rating: Thumbs up! The excitement's building to the fever pitch that means the writer did a great job!
