Title: Myth Directions
Author: Robert Asprin
Publisher: Ace Books
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1982

Tananda and Skeeve are off to other dimensions, looking for something that only Tanda can identify. It would help if she knew precisely what she wanted, but Skeeve doesn't mind: he's having the time of his life flitting through one new plane after another. That is, until Tanda sees the Trophy and will do anything to get it, even if it means involving herself--and Skeeve and Aahz--in the middle of a civil dispute that could kill them all. In fact, the odds don't look too good at all for their survival. Then again, when did Aahz and Skeeve ever worry about the odds? But why is Tanda so determined to get such an ugly, misshapen, disreputable thing anyway?

Myth Directions is the third book in the Myth Adventures of Aahz and Skeeve series. Where the first book established Skeeve as a wizard, and the second gave him his base of operations, this book sends him out and away, sort of on a field assignment where we get to see him in his first role as an established professional.

There's a lot about this particular book that renders it less amusing than its predecessors, such as the serious mission that Skeeve eventually must complete: specifically, rescuing Tanda. This time there's no room for the casual bumbling around that enabled him to flounder through his battle with Isstvan or the defeat of the invading army while he was in Possiltum. But that makes you sort of wonder, doesn't it: what is Skeeve actually capable of when he really gets down to business? After all, he isn't really a wizard, actually more an apprentice forced to pretend to be more than he really is. So can he pull this off?

Myth Directions may be more serious than the other Myth books, but it's no less enjoyable. We'll still get to see a great cast of demons, a.k.a. dimensional travelers, and the occasional dragon or two. We may even make some new friends while we're searching for ways to save Tanda. But you can't do it unless you read the book!

Rating: Thumbs up! Would you risk your life for something as ugly as the Trophy?
