Title: Necroscope IV: Deadspeak
Author: Brian Lumley
Publisher: Tor
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1990

Harry Keogh, the world's only known Necroscope, has visited a parallel universe, explored the vastness of the Mobius Continuum, and knows how to speak with the dead. He has returned to the universe of his birth, but he is no longer the same. He cannot return to that other world; the Opposition knows about him and has taken steps to prevent a repeat offense on their turf. He can no longer use the Mobius Continuum to travel, because the strange and complex equations he used to enter the Continuum are locked deep within his subconscious. He can no longer speak to the dead, because he no longer has his deadspeak. His son, the Wamphyri Dweller in that other world, has seen to that!

Now, however, the world needs Harry and his unique abilities more than ever. A new vampire has risen in the Balkans of Eastern Europe, and he brings with him a terrible evil, for he, too, can speak with the dead...and knows how to raise them forcefully from death into pseudolife to torture and command them! His heinous crimes send the dead screaming for the Necroscope's aid, but he is deaf to them. Desparately, the dead appeal to one who's evil in life continues in death. They loathe speaking with the undying spirits of vampires, but they have no choice: Harry must have his deadspeak back!

But trusting a vampire--especially a true Wamphyri--is a dangerous gamble. The vampires are treacherous by nature, and this one the dead have turned to is more sinister than most. Dead thing in the ground though he is, this fiend has an ulterior motive in aiding Harry: the risen vampire is his son! Harry has no choice but to meet with the dead vampire, but what will it cost him and the world? What will be the vampire's price for restoring the Necroscope's deadspeak?

I enjoy reading about vampires, and I enjoy reading about psychic phenomena. This book (and its nine related siblings) combines both my interests into a potent, compelling novel that I couldn't put down. You don't need to read the first books (reviews are in the Archive) to understand what's happening in this book, but I suggest you start at the very beginning of the series. It's not only easier to understand that way, you won't miss a single exciting minute! Warning: contains some graphic/sexual content.

Rating: Thumbs up! The Necroscope's an ordinary man, but he has some powerful friends in high...er, low places!
