Title: King's Test
Author: Margaret Weis
Publisher: Bantam Spectra
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 1991

Humankind has colonized the stars and established itself as a space-faring people. For centuries the race has rallied behind the Blood Royal and the Starfire dynasty, genetically superior men and women trained to lead and bred to rule the minds and hearts of people everywhere. A moment of weakness destroys the monarchy and replaces it with a corrupt, ineffectual Congress. There are those ever loyal to the Galactic Democratic Republic. There are those who ignore government and work as they always did. And there are those who would see a king leading the galaxy once more. First, however, they need to find The Lost King.

They found him in Dion Starfire, raised in secret by Platus Morianna, one of the last of the Guardians, members of the Blood Royal sworn to protect the monarchy. Now only two Guardians remain, and while one wishes she were dead, the other has renounced his heritage and seeks to dominate the galaxy himself. They would use Dion for their own purposes if they could...but Dion has other ideas. News of a powerful weapon has reached all of them...and one other. Now they scramble to obtain a device that could destroy the galaxy, and none know what would happen if they did capture it. All they know is that it is power, and they want it.

Three members of the Blood Royal--Dion, Maigrey Morianna, and Derek Sagan--descend upon Laskar, a planetary hell-hole with nothing to offer but a rich and powerful weapons dealer/designer. A fourth sits in the President's seat, but he is nothing but a puppet for a fifth, and this last is more powerful than the others combined. No one suspected he yet lived, for records declared his death during the fall of the monarchy. However, the mind-stealer is alive and well, and he is making his own bid for power in the galaxy.

Margaret Weis continues the science fiction work she began in The Lost King, the first volume in the Star of the Guardians sequence. The "hidden king" story has played itself out, but now Weis begins a "Lazarus" plot to meld with Dion's bid for legitimacy on the galactic stage. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll definitely love this one. Explore the eerie abilities of the Blood Royal and learn more about the night of the revolution in King's Test. You won't be disappointed.

Rating: Thumbs up! Humans, aliens, dark-souled wizards, and stone-faced zombies are the call of the day, and you'll find them all here!
