That said, on to the review!
Human existence changes irrevocably when the clairvoyant, Henry Darrow, has a vision of the future while attached to an electroencephalograph. And with that documentation of psychic abilities as valid scientific evidence, Darrow does what no one dreamed possible: organizing psychics into a economic-social body. Not everyone appreciates it, or some of the jobs they do: finding lost or stolen merchandise; foreseeing and preventing disasters, natural and otherwise; protecting high-ranking military and political officials. But Darrow and his successor, Daffyd op Owen, have a dream and will do everything in their power to realize it. The only question is if a world reluctant to believe in psychic powers will let them!
To Ride Pegasus is a terrific book about psychic powers and abilities. Although I don't usually enjoy reading short stories or novellas, this was a definite "must-read" because it provided the origin story for the Talent that feature so prominently into future books that I inadvertently picked up and read first. I'm glad I did get this book, though: the stories within its covers are instrumental in establishing the background of the Talent novels.
The part I enjoyed the most was the way the Talents were constantly struggling against the American government to arrange for political and social protection of Talents doing their jobs. And the thing of it is that the arguments for both sides made perfect sense. After all, if someone sees the future and others take steps to avert that future so that it doesn't happen, who's to say that it would have happened even if no one had done anything? So the conundrums and paradoxes pile up and the arguments go back and forth. Terrific!
To Ride Pegasus starts a brand new series of outstanding books from bestselling author Anne McCaffrey. and it and they are definitely worth reading over and over again. As a matter of fact, I think I'll pick up To Ride Pegasus and start reading it again! Hope you enjoy it when you read it too!
