That said, on to the review!
When bats suddenly start attacking people, it quickly becomes apparent that something is wrong...especially when those bats are moving steadily southward towards New York City and Manhattan Island. But what is behind the bat attacks? It's up to one NYPD detective and a zoologist at the Bronx Zoo to solve the mystery before it's too late. Working from their respective ends, Detective Robert Gentry and Dr. Nancy Joyce come up with the only possible answer, illogical though it is: that there is a giant bat--a "super" bat--that has taken control of lesser bats and is leading them straight towards New York City. Now it's up to the two of them to convince the city administration of that truth. But what if the giant bat isn't alone? What if it's just the beginning of a new species of giant, deadly, man-eating bats?
Vespers takes readers along chilling paths trod upon by prehistoric sharks swimming in ancient seas, legendary monsters inhabiting isolated lakes, and mythic creatures of the South American rain forests. And what's even more chilling is that this particular story could so easily be a true one!
I'd have to say the best part about this book--like Extinct and Meg and The Relic--has incorporated hard scientific fact into the story, adding to the plausibility of this book actually potentially becoming a reality. It might not occur as quickly as it does in the book, of course (that is, bats mutating into tremendous size after only two generations), but everything else is so confidently supported by researchable facts that it adds new levels to the believability factor. And while it does have some rather violent, bloody, gory scenes in it, they pale beside the sheer reality of the story and the expertise of the author in concocting such a believable tale.
Vespers is a definite must-read for any fan of giant animals or mutants as well as any fan who enjoys reading scientifically plausible fiction. And it's worth a second or third read through, just to make certain you really understand all the subtle currents and nuances that make this novel more than just words on a page. So get to your local bookstore and buy it!
