That said, on to the review!
Roan returns from an investigation of one of the outlying provinces. He returns to the capital city of Dreamland to make his report, but something strange is afoot. During his time away court politics has brought the Ministry of Science to the fore. They have produced a device--the crucible--that will allow them to combine their magical influence to shape a significantly larger patch of reality than any one man or woman can do alone. Now, they are ready to undertake the greatest experiment of all: to wake the creators and maintainers of Dreamland, the Seven Sleepers themselves!
It falls to Roan--naturally--to save the world...if he can. He must pursue a band of scientists--some avid and ambitious, some reluctant and ambivalent--across the face of Dreamland to where some believe the legendary Hall of the Sleepers lies hidden and protected. The scientists are not unaware of their pursuers, however: they throw dangerous traps and mind-boggling problems into Roan's path even as they use their new invention to hasten their own journey along. It's a race against time for all involved as the fate of Dreamland hangs in the balance. Roan is the first and last hope of the people, but can he succeed against such tremendous odds?
Jody Lynn Nye is not a rookie when it comes to writing; she's collaborated with Anne McCaffrey on several novels and written many in her own right. Waking In Dreamland is a superb and impressive work that will keep you reading until the very end. It may take a little while to adjust to this constantly changing world, but once you do, I'm sure you'll enjoy every alteration and every transformation Ms. Nye throws your way!
