Title: The Feline Wizard
Author: Christopher Stasheff
Publisher: Del Rey/Ballantine Books
Format: Paperback
Copyright Date: 2000

Balkis has one problem with her wizardry: she can't finish her verses! And this terrible fault leaves her vulnerable to other, less-than-friendly forces who would gladly use her as a pawn in their own schemes. But she is not without allies of her own, and luck would spirit her into the place where she may do the most good. And there she finds a young man who, though unable to start a verse himself, is more than capable of finishing what she begins. And now, it is only with his aid that she can return to the friends and family she was stolen away from. It won't be easy, though: not only must she pass through the greater expanse of her grandfather's empire, she must also combat the obstacles thrown in her path by the forces of evil. Matt Mantrell, determined to aid his former pupil, is likewise beset by foul forces. Can two of the most potent wizards in the world reunite their skills and turn back the darkness, or will Balkis be doomed to the unhappiness of limited magic for the rest of her life...however long that may be!

The Feline Wizard is a delightful chapter in the Wizard in Rhyme series. Although it follows more along the lines of The Witch Doctor in that it is more about Balkis than Matt, it is still a good read overall.

I'm a bit leery of stories in which everyone ends up happy. In this case, though, I'm willing to make an exception. Balkis has found her soulmate, which you'd expect considering that she needs someone to complete what she begins. I'm curious to see how Stegoman does in his search for a partner in life. After seeing how much pain he endured as a grounded outcast, you had to wonder whether or not he'd find someone who'd be a good match for him. This time, you do get to see the results of that yearning, but it remains to be seen if Stegoman will hit it off with Dimetrolas. Another Wizard in Rhyme book, perhaps?

After all is said and done, The Feline Wizard is a good read for anyone who believes in true love, soul mates, and love conquering all, even the heart reluctant to love. But if that's too confusing off-hand, then read the book and really understand!

Rating: Thumbs up! From start to broken finish, from abrupt start to smooth finish, this is a novel more complete than A to Z!
