I am the manager of Crystal Palace in the Mystify soccer game.

One of the joys of following all forms of football is the fact that the coaches and managers tend to use the same cliches and metaphors week in and week out, no matter what the details of the sport. This page gives me a chance to exercise my creativity with some Manager's comments on the results of my team in the Mystify game.

Season 5

League Fixtures

Crystal Palace is competing in the English First Division.

Week 1 Leicester City (Home) Lost 1-2
Leicester came here today and they were ready to play. They've made good use of the off-season, and they look like they could be real contenders for promotion this season.

I think there were a lot of people around the club who didn't rate Leicester as a real threat. You can't afford to do that in this competition. Its a very even league this season, and if you take your eye off the ball for a second, you can find yourself on a slippery slope into relegation trouble. Hopefully we've learned our lesson from this result, and we can take something positive from it into next week's game.

Week 2 Charlton Athletic (Away) Lost 1-2
It's very disappointing to be coming away from this game with nothing to show for it. I felt we were much more competitive this week than we were last week against Leicester, but at the end of the day, you've got to put the score on the board.

Charlton are one of the benchmarks we will be measuring ourselves against this season. Both Charlton and Crystal Palace I think saw themselves as not too far off promotion last season, so we'll both be looking to build on that experience and take that next step this season.

Week 3 Bristol Rovers (Home) Won 3-1
We've had a poor start to the season, to be frank, and we really needed to win this game. Its very pleasing that the lads responded to the pressure and came out to play 90 minutes of good hard football. We're still a long way off playing the way we want to, and taking only 3 points in the first 3 weeks has really put us behind the eightball, but at least we gave the fans something good to take away with them this week.
Week 4 Blackburn Rovers (Away) Won 1-0
It wasn't pretty out there today, but this is the kind of result the club needs if we're to take our game to the next level. Obviously its pleasing to see everyone firing on all cylinders and us blowing opposition teams out of the park, but realistically that's not going to happen every week. This result is the kind we need for those other games, where we grind out a win against a committed opponent, get a bit of luck going our way and come away with the 3 points.
Week 5 Manchester United (Home) Won 3-0
Obviously we're happy with the result, but we won't be resting on our laurels. We've got a big game coming up next week, and with Gianluca out for a couple of games, we'll have to reshuffle our defense.

Week 6 Southampton (Away) Drew 1-1
We've had some good results in the past few weeks and maybe we just started to get a bit ahead of ourselves. Southampton had all the play during the first half, and I thought we were lucky to come in only one goal down.

We had much more of the play in the second half, but we're just not clicking up forward. In the end it was up to Gordo to do the scoring. He's a great lad, and it was a great goal, but when the leading scorer at the club is playing at right back, something is wrong and it needs to be addressed.

Week 7 West Ham United (Home) Won 1-0
Well, we're happy with the three points as it keeps us in touch with the pacesetters. Its a long season, and there's a lot of football to come, but it was pleasing that we could put on a decent show for the fans this week.

Week 8 Stockport County (Away) Won 2-0
Stockport are a better team than their recent results indicate. Two goals was a good return for our effort, and hopefully we can take the lessons we've learnt here into next week. We have a tough few weeks coming up, and we'll be gearing up for that.

Week 9 Watford (Home) Won 2-1
It was a good result. We tried a few things against Burnley in midweek which didn't really come off, so we went back to a more normal set up in this game. There were a few nervous moments in the early part of the game, but once we got level, the crowd really got behind us, and the lads responded to that in a very positive manner.

Counting this match, we play all of the other top 6 teams over a 6 week period, so this game could be the start of something big, or it could just give us false confidence. We'll know in a month and a half, but until then we'll just take it one week at a time and stay positive, but not get too cocky.

Week 10 Southend United (Away) Won 2-1
We took our foot off the pedal. There's no doubt about that. The lads need to take a look at how they played for the last half hour or so, because we were very close to throwing the whole season away there and then. If we play like that this week, City will bury us.

Week 11 Manchester City (Home) Drew 0-0
Football's a funny game, isn't it? City were all over us for the whole of the game, but they just couldn't find the back of the net. But history will show that it was a draw, and under the circumstances, I'm pretty happy to take that.

Week 12 Millwall (Away) Lost 1-2
We went out there today with a defensive mindset. We would have been happy to come away with a point from the league leaders. But you can't afford to make mistakes when you're playing like that. We had ten minutes in the first half where we went to sleep, and to Millwall's credit they put us away in that time. The lads never gave up, and I thought we were a chance to draw level, but Millwall are a very professional unit at the back, and they never gave us an opportunity.

Week 13 Bournemouth (Away) Lost 0-1
We had our chances in the first half, but we didn't take them. I thought this game could have gone either way, but in the end it was Bournemouth that got the score on the board. Its disappointing to lose a game in the last five minutes, but thats football. Next time it might be us that scores the winner with 5 minutes to go.

Its been a disappointing few weeks, frankly. We've faced up to the best teams in the division, and we've come up short. Not far short, so there is some hope there, but at the end of the day we've only managed one point out of a possible nine, and we're out of both cup competitions. We can more or less write off promotion for another season, so there's not much left for us to play for. I think some of the players are more comfortable with that, but let me tell you I am not. Our fans expect more from us, and I plan to deliver on the fans' expectations. Any players that are happy playing for a team in the middle of Division 1 are going to find themselves transferred to one, because this club is not going to be staying here.

Week 14 Aston Villa (Home) Won 2-0
Two seasons ago we needed a win over Villa to stay in the Premiership, and we couldn't pull it off. Today we've shown how far we have come as a club in the last season and a half by beating them. Its a very positive result for the club.

I know they won't be making any excuses, but if Villa had their first choice keeper out there it could have been a very different story. We played three strikers out there and none of them relly looked convincing. Its been a problem all season, and its something that needs looking at. If the players we've got can't put the ball in the back of the net, we'll sell them and buy players who can.

Week 15 Burnley (Home) Won 3-0
It was a good win, and one that we needed to keep ourselves up with the leading pack.

I don't want to keep harping on about it, but once again our strikers didn't perform today. Fortunately we had young guys in the back half who were able to step up and shoulder the load, but we can't rely on that happening week in and week out.

Its the midpoint of the season, so its a good time to make an assessment og how we're travelling as a club. I think there is a lot to be positive about, but there is a long way to travel. Football is a funny game and there is not much point in us looking further ahead than next week's game. We've done a lot of rebuilding this season, but this season is about more than just rebuilding. I want to assure the fans that we will be fighting tooth and nail for a promotion place.

Week 16 Leicester City (Away) Won 1-0
Its always pleasing to be able to pick up three points on the road. To be honest with you, we just wanted to avoid letting Leicester do the double over us this season. Well, actually if you look at cup results as well, it would be the triple. We wanted to salvage some pride, and I think we managed that.

We're still in there with a chance of a promotion place, but there's a long way to go. Our destiny is in our own hands, which is pleasing, so its up to us how we play out the season.

Week 17 Charlton Athletic (Home) Won 3-1
Charlton had an easy win over us when we played them at the start of the season, so it was pleasing to be able to turn that around. The lads are starting to get the message, and I was very pleased with with the way they played today. We could have lost the game, and I still would have been pleased with the application I saw out there today.

Week 18 Bristol Rovers (Away) Won 4-2
Well, we've come away with the three points, and I'm happy about that. But I wasn't at all happy with the performance. We were playing the bottom team today. They haven't won a game yet this season. And yet they were never out of the game. We conceded two goals through some sloppy defending, and we were lucky it wasn't more. Unfortunately we have some injury worries at the back, otherwise there would be some big changes in the team that runs out on the pitch next week.

Week 19 Blackburn Rovers (Home) Won 1-0
It wasn't pretty football in the end, was it? Andy (Linighan) put us up within 10 minutes, but then the injury to Johna (Arneng) forced us to rearrange and we had to play a more defensive set up than I would have liked. To the lads credit, they managed to hold on to that one goal lead, but to be honest I thought both teams should have played more attacking football.

Week 20 Manchester United (Away) Won 3-1
It was a good result. I want to thank the fans who made the trip up to see us play. I think they would have been pleased, not just with the result, but with the style of football we were able to play today.

We've moved into the top three, but there are still four teams right in contention for three promotion spots. I don't know about the other clubs, but we have tough games right at the end of the season, so it is really important that we get the points on the board while we can. If we just keep trying to get it right on the pitch, it will all come out in the wash.

Week 21 Southampton (Home) Won 3-0
The pressure is really on us, and the lads have responded in the best possible way. A bad result any time between now and the end of the season could potentially cost a promotion spot, but we are trying not to be concious of that, and just taking it one game at a time.

On paper we aren't a better team than Southampton, or any of the other teams in this division, so its a matter of playing together as a team. I can't take any of the credit for that, its the mental qualities of the lads that is bringing us success at the moment.

Week 22 West Ham United (Away) Won 2-1
Its been a hell of a week. The events in America have affected us all. At the end of the day, football is just a game, it not life and death. On behalf of everyone at the club, I offer my condolences to all those who have lost loved ones, or have been affected by the tragedy. I hope and pray that the game can bring a ray of sunlight into what has otherwise been a very gloomy week for all of us.

Week 23 Stockport County (Home) Won 3-0
Its a good result, but we can't afford to get complacent. We have a big game coming up next week against Watford, so now our focus has to move to that game.

We tried young Stocchi in goals this week, and he kept a clean sheet. You can't ask for more than that. He's developing well, and he should really give us another option in goals, which is always good.

Week 24 Watford (Away) Drew 1-1
It was a little bit disappointing that we weren't able to take all three points, but overall I am satisfied with the result. We're in the box seat for promotion now, but we still need to keep winning to actually get over the line.

I think our new signings show that we do have aspirations for this club. We can't sit still. We've got to keep trying to improve, whether thats in the First Division or in the Premier is irrelevant.

Week 25 Southend United (Home) Won 4-0
Just looking at the scoreboard tells you that this is our best win for the season, and its very pleasing that we were able to put on a show for the fans who showed up today. Still that was far from the best team that Southend can field, so I don't think you can read too much into our performance today.

We played three of our youngsters today, and they really shone out. Sadler and Lee scored a pair each, and Stocchi did the busines at the other end. Thats not to discount the efforts of the older lads. Its a team sport, and in a way the whole team contributed to the result, even if it was only two of them that have their names up on the scoreboard. I'll be spending the next couple of days making sure that the young lads know where the credit is due. But for the moment, let's givem their moment of glory, eh?

Week 26 Manchester City (Away) Lost 1-0
Its a disappointing result, not just because we lost today, but also because its knocked us out of a promotion place. I'm still confident we can gain a promotion this season, but its not just up to us any more. Now we have to rely on one of the teams ahead of us slipping up.

Its our first loss in 13 weeks, so obviously we can be proud of our record for the season.

Week 27 Millwall (Home) Won 4-1
This helps put us right back on track. Its always satisfying when we can beat our local rivals, but doing it in such convincing fashion, and in front of our home crowd is doubly satisfying.

Week 28 Bournemouth (Home) Won 4-0
It was a great team effort today. All three strikers got goals, which shows they are doing their jobs. The back four did their bit too, holding Bournemouth scoreless.

We've snuck back into the promotion places this week, so now we have our future back in our own hands. As long as we keep winning, we'll go up. If we drop points, we'll have to rely on other results going our way.

If we do go up, frankly I think we'll be out-classed in the Premiership. If you look at the quality of the playing lists of some of the clubs then, on paper, we will struggle to match them. But football isn't played on paper, so we want to be in there with the big boys. There are plenty of young players in the squad, and I am confident they will improve for the experience.

Week 29 Aston Villa (Away) Won 4-3
It was disappointing that we let three goals in. Its still tight for the promotion places and it could all come down to goal difference. At the end of the day though, I am happy with the results. Aston Villa aren't fifth in the league by accident, so its pleasing for us to be able to come away with a win against them at their home ground.

Week 30 Burnley (Away) Lost 1-0
I'm absolutely gutted. We came so close this year, but in the end we've gone nowhere. Obviously we've seen some improvement from some of the lads, and I truly believe the squad is in much better shape now than it was at the start of the season, but at the end of the day we're still a First Division side, not a Premiership one. We'll start next season the same place we did this season.

I shoulder the responsibility for the result today. I thought the squad we chose had the goods, but perhaps I should have gone with a little bit more experience today. Once Burnley got a goal on the board, we didn't have enough experience to draw on to claw it back, and in the end thats cost us a place in the Premier.
