Some of C.J. Cherryh's earlier stories are the "Worldgate" series (Gate of Ivrel, etc.), which are strongly reminiscent of Andre Norton's "Witchworld" fantasies. Many of her science fiction stories carry some of the flavor that mark her fantasy stories. She is one of the authors I particularly enjoy because of their level of emotional maturity.

  • Merchanter's Luck,
  • Fourty Thousand in Gehenna,
  • Cyteen (!!!),
  • Rimrunners,
  • Heavy Time,
  • Hell Burner,
  • Tripoint,
  • Finity's End - These are stories of people in conflict with the inevitable. The people may be brilliant, or rather dull, but their human nature drives them to survive. C. J. Cherryh brings them all to life with such force that she keeps me on the edge of my seat every time her heroine or hero gets into a tight spot. Cyteen is particularly powerful.
  • Chanur series: The Pride of Chanur,
  • Chanur's Venture,
  • The Kif Strike back,
  • Chanur's Homecoming,
  • Chanur's Legacy - cats in space! These are the adventures of the Chanur clan. Cherryh's space operas are fast paced and very human - even when the protagonists are covered with fur and have tails. These stories sort of go with the series.
  • Foreigner,
  • Faery in Shadow,
  • The Goblin Mirror,
  • The Paladin
