Janet Kagan is probably better known for her "Star Trek" story Uhura's Song, which I haven't actually read - mostly because, while "Star Trek" is entertaining, I'm not much of a trekker. Mostly she writes great short stories, which come out far too rarely in magazines like Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine.

  • Mirabile - a world where nothing is quite what it seems. The world made its premier in the pages of "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine," where Janet Kagan published one or two short stories based on this idea. Often a move from the short story to the novel form does not work so well, but Janet Kagan brings it off without a hitch.
  • Hellspark - I read this story a while ago, but when I first composed this page I only remembered that I enjoyed it very much. Imagine my surprise when this weekend I was going through my bourgeoning email and found a note from Ms Kagan, thanking me for my "kind words". Dang, someone is actually reading this stuff! Anyway, she pointed me at a short story she's posted on the web, based on the novel Hellspark. It's sort of a "Just So Story", and she warned me that people who haven't read Hellspark might not understand it. I think you'll like it, if you just go and read it.
