Our Mission...
to provide free literacy
resources that will benefit the academic, occupational, and personal lives
of undereducated adults. The Commerce Library Literacy Program, an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America, was established
in 1991 in order to address the literacy
needs of undereducated
adults in our community and the surrounding area of Hunt county and rural
northeast Texas. It is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization under the umbrella
of the Friends of the Commerce Public Library. CLLP offers free classes
and individual tutoring to adults in three areas: Adult Basic Education
for those needing to learn to read or improve literacy skills; GED preparation
for those wanting to take the General Education Development exam (high
school equivalency); and English for Speakers of Other Languages for non-native
adults who need to improve their spoken and written English skills. More
than 2000 men and women from four Texas counties and 24 foreign
nations have received assistance from the Program.
Our offices are located in the Commerce Public Library , 1210 Park Street, Commerce, Texas 75428, and in room 217 of the Journalism Building on Education Drive at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Office hours are from 9:00 - 12:00 on Monday and Wednesdayat the Journalism Building. Commerce Public Library hours are 9:00-5:00 Monday - Friday and 9:00 - 12:00 on Saturday. Volunteer tutors are the heart of the Commerce Library Literacy Program, giving from one to six hours each week to share their knowledge and love of learning to help others. Classes for GED and ESL are held weekly and volunteer tutors working with basic literacy students schedule their own regular sessions.
