In the Beginning There Was Computer | |||||
IN the beginning The Engineer invented the Computer. And the computer was not interactive it was cold and impersonal. And The Engineer created E-Mail. The Engineer sent E-Mail Machine to Machine. And it was still impersonal but practical. The Project Manager sent E-Mail to Employees and it was efficient. So employees sent E-Mail to colleagues. And it improved collaboration. Collaboration led to friendships and E-Mail was fun. Friends exchange jokes via E-Mail and the "Forward" was invented. And people became lazy. And the Urban Legend was born. People explored new uses for E-mail. And the mailing list and spam were born. And to every forwarded joke, and to every forwarded poem, and to every forwarded urban legend, and to every newsletter, and to every memo and to every birthday announcement that came from E-Mail, The Engineer saw it and thought it was good.Did you know that the Internet was invented by the military? Using e-mail for research was its first application. Men invented e-mail but I bet it was women that suggested using e-mail to send meeting reminders. |

In 1992, I was beginning my Senior year of college. I took a class in statistics. One requirement for the class was getting an e-mail account. I remember thinking. "WHAT! What is THIS about?" I was a Senior and I had to learn something new. But, in order to conduct statistical research and run reports, I had to have an e-mail account to where the files could be sent. |

Some techno nerd called Ray Tomlinson sent the first e-mail message in 1971. He had invented a program to send messages back and forth to people on his project team. He is the guy who thought of using the "@"sign, too. Get this, the first e-mail messages was "QWERTYUIOP." What would you have sent? I know, your grocery list. From its humble beginnings, e-mail took off like wildfire. |
