Diamonds are one of the most precious of stones, in ancient times they were worn as polished stones and were treasured for their beauty. They are used in engagement rings because they are said to signify purity and innocence and they are said to be most powerful when combined with other gemstones, which is perhaps why rings which contain Diamonds and other gemstones together, became so popular.

Diamond is the hardest stone known, the name comes from a word meaning 'indomitable'. It is said to belong to Mars, the God of war - and was carried into battle, to guarantee success, as it brought the warrior both strength and courage. In ancient Rome it was set in steel rings and worn with the stone touching the skin, usually bound to the left arm, ensuring bravery, daring and victory.

The Diamond is used in matters of sexuality as it is a cleansing, purifying and releasing stone. It is said to help with self-confidence in relations with the opposite sex and has been worn to help remove cultural blockages which have caused generations of women to be non-orgasmic (which is perhaps another reason why it is known as 'a girl's best friend'!). It is worn to conquer infertility and in India, a white, unblemished Diamond, with a slightly black hue, is worn to ensure male children.

The Diamond is said to promote spirituality and is often used in meditation. Legend says that African Diamonds were first discovered, by Europeans, in a Shaman's leather pouch and was probably used in the same way that Shamans around the world use quartz crystal. It has long been thought of as a protective stone, and it should be faceted into a six-sided cut for the best results and to ensure bringing the wearer good luck.
