Powers: Grounding, Divination, Healing Hematite (also known as 'Volcano spit'!) is often confused with Bloodstone (the red-speckled green jasper), because in ancient times hematite was referred to as 'the blood-stone'. It was said to be able to 'bring about beneficial oxygenation of the blood stream', to energise the spleen and generally strengthen the body. It has been used as a healing stone from ancient times and was most often used for treating internal ailments. A piece of hematite was held in the hands whilst visualising, the stone was then placed on the afflicted part of the body and the illness was then said to be drawn out from the body. When powdered and mixed with ointment it was used as an eye salve. Wearing a necklace made of small stones of hematite is thought to give beneficial healing to the wearer. Hematite is a grounding stone said to 'promote balance, focus, convergence and concentration of energy'. It has a steadying and stabilising influence. When placed in the middle of a group of people it helps to achieve 'like-mindedness' and helps build trust and confidence. Hematite is also used for divination and scrying. The following is taken from the wonderful 'Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic'. "In a darkened room, light a red candle. Settle before it and hold a large piece of hematite so that the candle's flame is reflected on it. Gaze at the reflection and visualise a question. The answer will come to you."
