Powers: Protection, Healing, Health and Beauty Jasper is a variety of chalcedony, which is a form of quartz. It's a fairly common stone and found in many colours but red, brown, green and 'mottled' are the most well known. Jasper is also known as 'the Rainbringer' because it was used by Native Americans Indians in ceremonies to attract rain; and 'the Talisman' because of its use by healers to enhance diagnosis. Green Jasper is thought of as a powerful healer. It can be worn as an amulet to ward off illness, or as a talisman to bring good health. It is said to help with problems of the liver, gallbladder and bladder. To strengthen his digestive tract, the ancient Egyptian King Nechepsus wore a Green Jasper, engraved with the image of a dragon surrounded by rays. It can be worn to stop hallucinations and also to encourage restful sleep. Jasper can also be worn to relieve pain, especially during childbirth, and held in the hand of the mother-to-be it is said to protect both the mother and the unborn child. Jasper is thought of as a protective stone. Red Jasper is used in defensive magic - as it sends negativity back to the original sender. It was carried to guard against poison and to cure fevers (engraved with lions or archers). Mottled Jasper, especially when carved with an equal-armed cross (which represents the powers of the four elements) is thought to give protection against drowning. Brown Jasper is used mainly for grounding - it gives a sense of balance to the spirit and grounds you both physically and emotionally. Used after magical rituals, or psychic or spiritual work, Brown Jasper helps to 'bring you back down to earth'. Wear Brown Jasper to keep yourself centred. Jasper, carved into a perfect arrowhead, can be worn to bring luck to its wearer; and Red Jasper, when worn by young women, is said to promote beauty and grace.
