Plan of Sector Schoenenbourg:This is a plan of the immediate vicinity of ouvrage Schoenenbourg in the Fortified Sector of Haguenau. It is an excellent example of the defensive "system" used from one end of the line to the other. It shows the line of anti-tank rails, interval casemates, observatories, barbed wire entanglements, casernes, shelters and rail lines leading to the fortress entrance.
Plan of Ouvrage du Four à Chaux:I attempted for several months to draw a similar plan using a graphics program - I failed. That is when I asked Mr. Wahl to use his diagrams - you can see why that was a good idea. This ouvrage is located in the Fortified Sector Vosges, just to the south of the village of Lembach. It consisted of six combat blocs and two entrances. Both entrances are unique to the Maginot Line. The munitions entrance is located below the principal gallery. Munitions actually travelled up, along an inclined plane, to the principal gallery. The men's entrance was located up the hill from the EM (see "Design/Macro for a photo of the EM) and is on the same level as the principal gallery.
Petit Ouvrage de Bremmelbach:This is a very interesting study because this ouvrage was never built as such. The plan was to construct additional fortresses in this sector, but the cost was too high. The result was to turn projects like Bremmelbach into "coupled casemates," joined one to the other by an underground gallery. I included this diagram because it has an excellent cutaway elevation of a typical combat bloc with turret. The only thing missing is the elevator which would have been surrounded by the staircase.
