The Burial of Mont des Welches

The Fate of the Abandoned Maginot Line

Mont
Munitions Entrance - Mont des Welches - Spring 2005

Mont des Welches is my favorite ouvrage. I first visited it in 1989 and returned in 1990 with a friend to explore the inside. At the time it was wide open.

It is a very unique ouvrage. Bloc 4 is magnificent and a unique set of stairs leads to the obervation bloc. In Spring 2005, parties unknown dumped a pile of dirt over the front of entrance, ruining the facade and a piece of history. I don't know why they did it. I suppose to keep people like us out, or to keep someone out who, if they get hurt, will sue the Army - a more likely scenario.

As a friend recently said, hopefully the burial will preseve what's inside for a future association to come in and reopen it.
