I'M SURE Y'ALL KNOW that static electricity is not good for your computer. In fact, it only takes a 5v discharge to destroy components. When you walk across the room and get a shock, the smallest discharge you can feel is a whopping 2500v. So if your computer is in an area that generates static electricity, you can reduce the chances of damage by making a solution of 1 part liquid fabric softener to 10 parts water. Put this in a spray bottle and spray the rugs and drapes or other fabric in the room. Let the spray dry overnight, and repeat this process once or twice. Your house will smell great, and your computer will thank you. No charge for that tip.

DLL FILES

Short for Dynamic Link Library, a library of executable functions or data that can be used by a Windows application. Typically, a DLL provides one or more particular functions and a program accesses the functions by then creating either a static or dynamic link to the DLL.

A static link remains constant during program execution while a dynamic link is created by the program as needed. DLLs can also contain just data.

DLLs can be used by several applications at the same time. There are always some DLLs provided with the Windows operating system and available for any Windows application. Other DLLs are written for a particular application and are loaded with the application.

DEFRAGMENTING

Writing a letter, checking your email, visiting a web site, all cause little bits of information to be stored on your computer's hard drive. When you delete any of this info, you leave a little space where that data used to be stored. This causes your files to be fragmented. That is, to be all messed up from the orderly state they should be in. When many files become fragmented, your hard disk starts to perform much more slowly.

It's like you need your tools but they are all over your house and not in one place. Now you have to run here and there to pick up the screwdriver, the wrench, and whatever (it takes time). But when you have them all in one condensed kit, you'll get your dripping sink fixed in less time. Then you can get back to wasting more time on your computer.

Also, and this is serious, the danger of file corruption is greater, so it is a good idea to defragment often. This is also known as Optimizing your hard disk. When you defragment, you are rearranging your files back to their orderly fashion. Or, I should say, your computer is doing this for you. And we return to the ... Menu
