FILTERS FOR SALE

Several companies sell software that filters out Web pages that are inappropriate for kids. This kind of software runs on your computer and blocks your kids from seeing inappropriate stuff without restricting your access. Some popular vendors include:

CyberPatrol ... http://www.cyberpatrol.com
Net Nanny ... http://www.netnanny.com
SafeSurf ... http://www.safesurf.com
SurfWatch ... http://www.surfwatch.com
Cybersitter ... http://www.solidoak.com

Note: None of these programs tells you exactly what they filter out; their idea of what's appropriate or inappropriate may not match yours.

Acrobat is a way of converting a file into a picture. This means that you can print the "picture" but not alter it. So a .pdf by definition cannot be worked on like a file.

Btw, one quick example of why this is done and when it is used, is for government tax or financial forms. IRS would not post its forms on the Internet until it could get them into Acrobat mode, so "downloading" becomes the equivalent of obtainig a picture; such a picture of a form could not be altered ... but can be printed as is.

INTERNET VIRUSES

You've probably received dozens of those silly warnings urging you not to open a particular email message with the subject line "blah blah blah" because it contains a virus ... Of course, EVERY ONE of these warnings is a hoax ... you cannot get a virus by simply opening an email message ... regardless of the email's subject line ... but that hasn't stopped people from creating a swarm of fake email virus warnings. But opening an ATTACHMENT, ah, that's another matter; there you have to take all the precautions possible (even if it says "I love you").

My favorite one reads like this: "In case you receive an email titled, 'How to Give a Cat a Bubble-Bath' - DO NOT open it - 'twill erase everything on your hard drive"

That's a vivid image, isn't it? ... While clever, it is still a hoax (and, if you do decide to give your cat a bubble-bath, let me assure you that lost computer data will be the LEAST of your worries.) ... You can find out why the "cat bubble-bath warning" is a hoax, and learn everything you need to know about Internet viruses and virus hoaxes, at ... Anti-Virus Help ... Stiller Research ... Urband Legends ... any one of these will set you straight ... So enjoy that bubble-bath, with or without your cat.
