231. John Buckalew. Born in 1812. John died in 1889; he was 77.
From "Book of Biographies -- Seventeenth Congressional Dist": ...was reared in Cambria and when he grew to manhood took charge of his father's store and conducted it for several years. Later he engaged in the cultivation of the soil and was the owner of a fine farm in Fairmount township. He was joined in wedlock to Rachel Creveling, a daughter of Samuel Creveling, and the following children were reared: Russell C., the subject of this sketch; Amos, deceased; Sheridan, a farmer; Sarah C., the wife of John Robinson, a resident of White Haven, Pa.; Evans, who resides in Wilkesbarre, Pa.; Eli, deceased, who was a veteran of the Rebellion; Samuel S., who is engaged in farming on the old homestead; Mary R.; and James M., who also resides on the old homestead. Mr. Buckalew died aged seventy years. Rachel Creveling Buckalew died, aged sixty-four years
On 26 December 1833 when John was 21, he married Rachel Creveling, daughter of Samuel Creveling. Born in 1812. Rachel died in 1877; she was 65.
They had the following children:
232. Evan Buckalew. Born in 1814. Evan died in 1877; he was 63.
An 1850 Mortality Schedule, Luzerne Co., PA: States that an Evan Buckalew, 35, of Luzerne Co., died in March of consumption. He was a laborer, and had been born in PA. This death year conflicts with the 1877 year that I already had for this Evan.
233. Amos Buckalew. Born in 1816. Amos died in 1826; he was 10.
234. Almira Buckalew. Born in 1819. Almira died in 1858; she was 39.
235. Sally Ann Buckalew. Born in 1823.
236. Eli Buckalew. Born in 1825. Eli died in 1841; he was 16.
237. Mary Buckalew. Born in 1830. Mary died in 1859; she was 29.
238. Elizabeth Buckalew. Born in 1833.
239. Harriet Buckalew. Born on 15 April 1835 in Cambra, PA.
Harriet married Colonel Chester K. Hughes. Chester K. died on 12 September 1889 in Shamokin, PA. Buried in Pine Grove Cem.
Resided in Cambra, PA, in 1862, and raised a company, of which he was made captain, his command becoming Co. I, of the 143rd Reg, PA Volunteer Infantry. Eventually promoted to colonel of his regiment. Mustered out at Hart Island, honorably discharged in 1865
