Seventh Generation (Continued)

Family of Richard Buckalew Jr. (304) & Mary/Rachel ? Unknown

712. James Buckalew. Born on 26 July 1784 in Lancaster Co, SC. James died in Ramer, Montgomery Co., AL, on 26 July 1873; he was 89. Buried in Sentell Cemetery, Ramer, Montgomery Co., AL.

Much of the material contained in the family history file of James Buckelew is the fruit of the careful, conscientious, and faithful work of Mary Jo (Athey) Evans. Mary Jo was a major contributor to the publications of Gerry Green concerning Alabama Buckelews.

Conjecture: That this James may be the son and "Jr." of James, Sr., brother of Richard. Had him originally entered as son of Richard, James, Sr.'s, brother. In either family, James (Jr.) would be child or a 66 or 67 year-old father, possible but unlikely. It would, however, be strange for James to be designated "Jr." in Richard's family.

1812, land that had been granted to Richard Buckalew and inherited by George Buckalew was sold to James. He was called "James Buckalew, Sr." at the administration of his estate on 18 Dec 1819 and is believed to have had at least one child, James, Jr., who administered James, Sr.'s estate in 1819.

Variant spelling: BuckaleN; both Hampshire Co., VA and Lee Co., GA (1830).

1812, War of 1812 Veterans (State of SC): James Buckelew with Col. William Austin's Regt. SC Militia (SC Arch have no records for James)..., 243.

1816, 26 July, Edgefield Co., SC; Administration Bond, Estate of James Buckelew, Jr.: James Buckelew, Sr., Jacob Green & William Cockeroft were bonded for $800.

1818: M/P Spring 1817, MS Territory, establishing new Alabama Territory. James and Rebecca appear to have moved to Montgomery Co., AL soon after their son, Richard, was born in SC in 1818.

1819: Sold their property in Lancaster Co. just after migrating to AL.

James and Rebecca are not recorded from 1819 until 1830 when they showed up in Pike Co., AL. There are, however, some hints of a grant for James in Blount Co., AL, about 1820.

Rebecca became known as a midwife. 'lots of experience.
Westward movement of the several of the children took place in the latter part of the 1840s. Robert, Berry and James appear to have gone first, followed by Elisian and Len Hough, and, maybe, Rhoda and Elijah Wyatt. First stop was Union Parish, LA.

James Buckelew living in Montgomery Co., AL, Aug 1870.

In 1808 when James was 23, he married Rebecca Champion, daughter of Jacob Shadrack Champion (about 1750-12 June 1832) & Anne Martin(?) Elizabeth Axton gives James' wife as "Rachel."

Rebecca Champion was married to a James Buckalew and was named in the 1832 will of Revolutionary ancestor, Jacob S. Champion in Cambed, S. C. along with 12 other children. Widow was Ann Champion.

1818, 22 Mar; Lancaster Co., Deed: James (signed name) Buckolew to Richard Buckalow, both of Lancaster Dist., for $150 -- the 50 acre plantation where John Marler formerly lived. Adj: Richard Buckalow land, the great Road & a ridge; a part of a 250 acre tract granted to Marler. Wit: Richard (signed name) Buckolew, Jr., and Abner (signed name) Buckalew. Ack. Abner Buckalew 9 Jan 1819 before James Douglas, JP. Old Series, Bk I, p. 151, 152. Ibid.

Probably the Abner Buckelew who showed up on the 1840 Williamson Co., TN, census with what looks like a wife, seven children, and a woman between 50 and 60 years. In following years two other Buckelews show up there, one was the marriage of Mary Buckelew to Wiley Pewitt, and the other was a court case where William Buckelew charged Benjamin Brown with assault. We assume these were Abner's children, but that may not be true at all. The only other thing known about Abner, there, is when he sold 160 acres of land in 1848.

Abner married Elizabeth Byrd, daughter of Joseph Byrd Byrd.

"S.C. Marriages 1729-1867, Implied in SC Equity Reports," Vol. I, by Barbara R. Langdon; Vol 6 RIEQ 129-137.

718. William Dorsey Buckalew Sr. Born in 1795 in Edgefield, SC. William Dorsey died in Chapel Hill, AL, on 11 February 1845; he was 50.

The only Buckelew known to be in SC in 1830, in Edgefield Co.

We have an obvious discrepancy here with respect to date of death or this being the correct William. This needs some work. Enlightenment solicited.
