Buckalew Mountain: "On the east side of Boyd's Creek is a range of hills known locally as Buckalew Mountain. The Buckalews were neighbors of the Boyd family. The Boyd homestead farm included some mountain acreage. After the Cival War a branch line of what is now the Central of GA Railroad was built through the area from Opelika (Lee Co., AL) to LaFayette (Chambers Co., AL) to Roanoke. The railroad traversed the Boyd property, running between Boyd's Creek on the west and Buckalew Mountain on the east. Water for the steam locomotive was supplied by gravity flow from a spring atop the mountain to a tank erected on the right-of-way, hence the name Boyds Tank. (Elijah M. Williams, son of Mamie Buckalew Williams remembers the spring that fed this tank. He went in 1969 to the Buckalew home site and drew a rough sketch of the floor plan of the house, showed us Flint Hill, the old terraced orchards on top of Buckalew Mountain.)" Notes from Dorothy Tilley, per "The Boyds of Boyds Tank." In a letter from Bob Smyer to Edna Taylor, he states Buckalew Mountain is in Ssec. 18, T21N, R27E.

E. M. Williams, a grandson, age 85 in 1969: "William Dorsey (Doss) Buckalew made peach brandy and sold to individuals until prohibition. At time Prohibition Law was signed, his brother, Seaborn Jessie, was on his way to Montgomery with a load of brandy. He made delivery after Law was signed and kept going to Texas. Settled in East Texas."

With reference to the previous paragraph, Collier Smith, grandson of Seaborn Jesse Buckelew wrote the following on 06 July 04:
"My information is that William Dorsey Jr had a brother Seaborn B. about whom this story might be true, but Seaborn Jesse was William Dorsey Jr's son. On the one hand, Seaborn B. was born in 1840, and thus was 80 in 1920 (if he survived that long) and somehow this story doesn't sound too likely with an 80-year-old protagonist. But Seaborn Jesse was 51, had been married 11 years, and presumably was fairly settled (I am not sure where he and his family were in 1920, most likely Sarcoxie MO or north-central TX, possibly Dallas)....Or maybe it doesn't refer to the Volstead Act at all, but some other more local prohibition."

James and Jerry Williams, great grandsons of Wm. Dorsey Buckalew and Julia Ann Hart Buckalew, have original portraits which hung in the home of their grandmother, Mamie Buckalew Williams. These were copied into miniatures by Josephine A. Knight.

On 13 December 1852 when William Dorsey was 25, he married Julia Ann Hart, daughter of John Hart & Eliza Johns, in Chambers Co., AL. Born on 11 February 1835 in Edgefield, SC. Julia Ann died in Blooming Grove, nr Corsicana, TX, on 22 January 1905; she was 69. Buried in Rose Hill Cem., Blooming Grove, Navarro Co., TX.
