Thanks for the wonderful web sight. I believe I have some connections to your lineage through a Nancy H. McKeel that married a Moses Buckalew on Aug 25, 1862. Moses was 'killed' in Franklin Tenn. November 1864 (I presume in the Civil War) It's a little difficult to read, but it appears there was an
Alice E Buckalew that "Died age 3 hours" on March 18, 1863?

Nancy H. McKeel was born Sept 30th, 1843. She remarried apparently a F? Charles W. Steward on April 5, 1865.

Nancy H. McKeel, I believe was the oldest sister of my Great Grandfather Mark. Z. McKeel born Aug 8, 1851.

Does any of this square with your records? It comes from a 'Family Record' that I only have a copy of -- hence some of the difficulty in deciphering. There seems to be a couple of spaces that my info could fit...

Mil. Svc.:: 1861, 11 June, Fulton Co., GA, CSA Records: ...enlisted this date w/ the Fulton Co. Lewis & Phillips Guards, originally County Line Guards. Transferred to Co. 1, 37th Regt. Ga. Infantry as 3rd Corporal 6 May 1863. Wounded at Chickamauga, GA, 19 Sep 1863. Appointed 2nd Corporal 25 Mar 1864, and was killed at Franklin, TN, in 1864.

Moses Buckalew enlisted as Private 11 June 1861, Co. C, 3rd Battalion, GA Volunteer Infantry, Army of TN, Fulton Co., GA... Lewis & Phillips Guards (originally "County Line Volunteers." Transferred as 3rd Corporal to Co. I, 37th Regiment of GA Infantry 6 May 1863. Wounded at Chickamauga, GA 19 Sep 1863. Appointed 2nd Corporal 25 Mar 1864. Roll for 1 Apr 1864, last on file, shows him present. Killed at Franklin, TN in 1864.

On 25 August 1862 when Moses was 19, he married Nancy H. McKeel, daughter of Mark J. McKeel (2 February 1819-) & Rebecca M. Early (12 February 1822-). Born on 30 September 1843.

The first information that I received about Nancy was from Russ McKeel on 19 Oct 1999.

They had one child:
4297 i. Alice E. (1863-1863)

2557. Ann Buckalew. Born about 1845 in GA.

2558. Eliza Buckalew. Born about 1847 in GA.

2559. John G. Buckalew. Born about 1850 in GA.

May be the John Buckalew in the following 1878 newspaper story. The last of the children that we have for him was born "about" 1878.

Buckalew was a large man being 6' tall and weighing over 200 lbs. He was known as a bully and was disliked and feared by his fellow workers (at Rolling Mill) and neighbors. On Sat night 2/23 he left home looking for trouble and found it in the barroom of H C Martin at the junction of Marietta St and Mayson-Turner Rd, a 1/2 mile beyond the city llimits. Buckalew entered the barroom and found several men there among whom was Green Clayton, a frail little fellow who lived just outside the city and makes a living hauling wood into town. Upon entering the room, Buckalew peeled off his coat and roared "I can whip any damn man in the room." He excepted Mark Sweet a one armed man who was present. He repeated his challenge but no one took him up. He then walked up to Clayton and knocked him reeling with his fist. He then knocked up other men in the room and eventually returned to Clayton who had drawn a knife and then put it up. He then cursed Clayton and began to beat him terribly. He finally beat and kicked Clayton out of the front door and followed him out. A moment later Buckalew came back in bleeding profusely from a long knife cut on the side of his neck. He seemed frantic and attacked Dr Donehoo who was in the room. He was finally stopped by a J A ____ just before he fell over into a corner of the room and expired. He died at 9:45 about 30 min after he first appeared in the barroom. It is not known whether Clayton stabbed him or whether n the struggle, he jabbed his own knife into his neck and severed an artery. The coroner decided that Buckalew came to his death "by a cut in the neck, inflicted by unknown hands." Clayton disappeared and was not seen anymore that evening. Buckalew leaves a wife, father, and brother but no children. Clayton gave himself up to the police at noon on Feb 26. He was acquitted on 2-27-1878.

Dear Les, I am a friend of Nova's that is helping her research her lineage. (She doesn 't have a computer) The following is all the information that she has.

Francis Marion Buckalew Born: September 23, 1886 in Trion Factory, Georgia Died March 06, 1940 in Dallas, Texas

Wife: Minnie Magdalene Cooper Born December 16, 1889 Died May 04, 1962 in Dallas, Texas Children Nova J. Buckalew Female Born November 19, 1922 Francis Marrion Buckalew, Jr. Male Born July 17, 1919 Billie Jean Buckalew Born December 26, 1925 She died but I don't have the date

His father and mother (Francis) Charles P. Buckalew Caroline Margaret

I have the Family Tree Maker and am just getting into this genealogy stuff. I really don't know what I am doing.

I hope we can help Nova find out a little about her ancestors. Sincerely appreciate your reply to our email. I think she would be interested in coming to a family gather if it turns out that you are part of her lineage. Again I thank you, Ina Aduddell, Amarillo, Texas

My reply, same day; "News for Nova": Good afternoon, Ina,

I have in my files only one family of whom I know to have Trion, GA, connections, and I do find therein a Charles Buckalew, b. about 1859. I regret to say that I have no other information about this Charles, but it's very possible that he is the Charles P. Buckalew that was the father of Nova's Francis Marion Buckalew.

This Charles had a brother, John G. Buckalew, who I know to have been in Trion, GA, because John G. had a son, The Reverend John W. Buckalew (for whom I have much information), who was born in Trion, GA. This would make Charles to be John W.'s uncle.

The logic of my thinking is that John G., being Charles' older brother, it's likely that Charles moved to Trion, GA, at the same time that his older brother did. This, then, would make this particular Charles the only Charles of whom I know to have Trion, GA, connections...

Charles married Caroline Margaret.

Conjecture: That she is the wife of this Charles Buckalew and mother of Francis Marion Buckalew who was born 23 Sep 1886 in Trion, GA., and died 6 March 1940 in Dallas, TX.

They had the following children:
4304 i. Francis Marion (1886-1940)
4305 ii. Charles C.
