A George is listed with the above in 1790. A George and James are listed in the 1810 census in Lancaster District, SC. cf Rebecca Buckalew, Cambed, SC.

Its possible that Mahulda was not John's first wife.

On 28 June 1840 when John was 25, he married Mahulda Horton, in Hall (Gwinnett ?) Co., GA. Born on 3 October 1822 in GA. Mahulda died in Blount Co., AL, on 20 April 1894; she was 71. Buried in Pleasant Grv Cem, Blount Co., AL.

Alternate spelling, "BuckELOW".
Marriage in Hall County, GA.
Family in the Gwinnett County 1950 Census.
Muhulda apparently not John's first wife, nor the mother of the first four children of the family.
1870 Census, Blount Co., AL, shows John Buckalew (50) as Family # 891 with H.L. Horton (25) as #891a. This could indicate a non-family member adult living with the Buckalews, in this case Mahulda's brother or son by previous wife.

Died from La Grippe (influenza), Dr. J.W. Boyd, physician.

On 15 October 1851 when Elijah Parks was 22, he married Leodice/Leodicea/Louisa (?) Victoria Harkins, in DeKalb Co., GA. Born on 26 November 1833 in NC. Leodice/Leodicea/Louisa (?) Victoria died in Saline Co., AR, on 16 June 1901; she was 67. Nickname: Dicie.

17 Mar 1998:I also pulled Joseph W. Buckelew's Marriage license to Mary Ann Stewart on 30 July 1882 in her home. Daniel P. Horton was Witness. There were two more license issued to Joseph, one to Sarah Ann Stewart on 4 July 1882, a second to Mary Ann Stewart on 4 July 1882, both were not solemnized (I had
to look it up, no ceremony with religious rites performed).

1897, 5 Mar; Confederate Pension Application: Of Horton, AL, stated he served as a private in Co. B of the 28 Regt., AL, Vols. He also said he was wounded in 1863 near Chattanooga, TN. He had been shot in the right arm and was (in 1897) very old and infirm, and was physically unable to earn a livelihood by labor. He was a farmer, and his taxable property consisted of 100 acres of mountain land, 1 mule and 1 wagon. Bd. recommended.

1898, 13 Jun; Confederate Pension Application: Reapplied. All information is the same as above, except that he said he was wounded in his arm and leg at Chickawauga, TN, in 1862. He lost his wagon, but gained a cow. Bd. again recommended.

Second wife, Sarah: Marriage certificate records her name as "Maberry." I suspect she may have been one of the GA "Mabrys." Joseph's brother, Solomon P. also married a Mabry.

1907, June; Widows' Confederate Pension Application #38024: Widow Bettie stated she was a citizen of Marshall Co., that J. W. B. had died 15 Sep 1903. Bd. recommended.

1999, 21 Nov: Visited Oak Grove Meth. Church Cem., Horton; Marshall Co., AL, and there found a Confederate grave marker: "Joseph W. Buckelew; Pvt, Co. B, 28 Reg, AL Inf, CSA; 1833-1903."

"I have a complete copy of Joseph W. Buckelew's Civil War Record. Your E-mail agrees with what I have. He was captured at Chattanooga, moved to a prisoner camp at Nashville, TN, then to Rock Island, Ill. He was released there at the end of the war. Must have been a tuff old bird. I think that he was or there was another Joseph W. Buckelew who was on the Oak Grove
Methodist Church Board when the land was bought from Tom Hayes."

Maybe the "E." was for Elizabeth, ergo "Bettie" or "Betsy."

On 30 July 1892 when Joseph Wesley was 60, he fourth married Mary Ann Stewart, in Marshall Co., AL. In bride's home.

1462. Solomon Parks Buckalew. Born about 1836 in GA. Solomon Parks died in Blount Co., AL, in March 1892; he was 56. Buried in Pleasant Grove C, Blount Co., AL.

William Dobbins noted that S. P. Buckelew was William Sanford Solomon Parks Buckelew, and was sometimes called "Big Parks." "Little Parks," son of Joseph, brother to Solomon Parks Buckalew.

"I have several facts such as mortgages (dated 1867 and cleared in 1881, Solomon P. Buckelew), Civil war record (he had only two cards,21 Aug 1862 and 13 Apr 1864), and two articles in Guntersville Democrat on his death. They carried him as S. P.
Buckelew."
