Ninth Generation (Continued)

Family of William H. Buckalew (1464) & Annie Elizabeth Peacock

2622. James LaFatte Buckalew. Born on 19 May 1833 in MS. James LaFatte died on 10 May 1891; he was 57. Buried in Kings Cem., Elwood Community, Clarke Co., MS.

Elsewhere "Buckelew", also "Lafatte"
Other source has birthdate as 3 Aug 1833.
Clarke Co., MS; Cemetery Records: J.L. Bucklew, Pvt., born 1833, Miss; died 1891; Buried Clarke Co. From "Grave Registrations, Confederate Soldiers," Miss. Genealogy & Local History, Vol. 7, p. 5.
Civil War Enlistments, c. 1861, MS: James L. Buckaloo, private, Co. E, 7th.
1880 Clarke Co., MS: Rather than a daughter "Samantha," born about 1855, there's a "Rebeca," of that same age. Perhaps the same person, Samantha Rebecca.
King cemetery is in a pasture north of Elmwood, MS, between Pachuta and Quitman.
In Civil War, served in Co. E, 7th Ms Inf, enlisting at Quitman 20 Apr 1862. Like his Huckaby cousins, he was apparently plagued by illness; he was in hospital at Enterprise through the fall and early winter of 1862-63, then at Vicksburg as of 18 Feb, 1863, then at Enterprise from June to 31 Oct 1863. He was on duty during the fall and early winter of 1863-64, but was reported AWOL 25 Feb 1864. He appears, however, on the roll of prisoners who surrendered at Meridian 11 May 1865.
After the war, he settled near Quitman. He apparently farmed land owned by William Johnson for a time; in a deed dated 10 Feb 1872, he secured a $265 promissory note to Johnson for maney and supplies, due 1 Jan 1873, with a 10-year old mouse-colored mare and the entire crop of cotton to be grown by him that year. Eventurlly, he was able to acquire a farm of his own, but for some reason it was through his wife. On 16 May 1887 for $200 she purchased 280 acres (E half of SE qtr, NE qtr and NE qtr of NW qtr, Sec 31, Twp 3, R 15) from Leo M. and Martha Massingale. The property lies near the Chickasawhay River, across the county road between Savenlove and State Highway 18 west of Quitman. James and Eliza had eight children.
From Frederick Jackson "Jack" Buckelew: "Records of Clarke County, MS, 1834-1854," by Jean Strickland and Patricia W. Edwards, 1995--Information in the Confederate Widow Pension application of Eliza Ann Buckelew (wife of James Lafaytte): (1) Her age, 67; (2) Lived in Clarke Co., MS; (3) Post Office was Quitman, MS; (4) Husband's name was Layfayette Buckelew; (5) They married in 1854; (6) He enlisted in MS; (7) Enlisted May 1862; (8) His company was E, 7th Battalion; (9) Served 3 yrs; (10) Served under "Capton" Pearson and Col. Terrall; (11) Served until "close of the war"; (12) Was honorably discharged 1865 in Mobile, AL; (13) He served until "the surrender"; (14) Died at home in Clarke Co. May 10 1891; (15) She was still a widdow, could not earn a livelihood, and was indigent; was receiving no government aid; (16) Had no property; (17) Had no home; lived with "dauter"; pension was applied for on July 30, 1903. Affidavit of 2 witnesses signed Aug. 27, 1903. Pension application was approved Sept. 7, 1903. (Jack's note: She died August 14, 1904.)

Extract from 30 Dec 1996 e-mail message from Frederick Jackson "Jack" Buckelew to Les Buckalew: " My James L. and sibling (sic) from William and Annie had lots more relatives in MS than I believed. Peacocks, Huckabys, Buckelews and Greens--all from Marengo, AL. All these family groups were in a nest together according to census records--around old Zeb Buckelew and his proven children. About 25 miles further into MS in Scott County was your William Buckalew family. I think these Marengo, Clarke, AL Buckelews were very tight with wealthy old William Green in their westward migration and I must do more Green sresearch to find 'Beyond Ezekiel.' An interesting item to further tighten relationships--Zeb's wife was Mary 'Polly' Raily/Raiety. In Marengo, AL one Barnet D. Green m. Eliza Raley 3-5-1847. James J. Green m. Emeline Railey 8-8-1851."

From John Pierce: "James Lafayette Buckalew (his name was always pronounced LaFate) married Eliza Ann Barnes (Nov. 28, 1837-Aug. 14, 1904), daughter of James and Mary Barnes, in Clarke Co., MS, July 20, 1854. John Ballard was the co-bondsman, and M.M. Wolfe the minister. James and Eliza are both buried at King Cemetery, in a pasture north of Elmwood between Pachuta and Quitman. During the Civil War, James L. Buckalew served in Co. E, 7th MS Inf., enlisting at Quitman Apr. 20, 1862. Like his Huckaby cousins, he was apparently plaqued by illness: he was in hospital at Enterprise through the fall and early winter of 1862-63, then at Vicksburg as of Feb. 18, 1863, then at Enterprise from June to Oct, 31, 1863. He was on duty during the fall and early winter of 1863-64, but reported AWOL Feb. 25, 1864. He appears, however, on the roll of prisoners who surrendered at Meridian May 11, 1865.

"After the war, he settled near Quitman. He apparently farmed land owned by William Johnson for a time; in a deed dated Feb. 10, 1872, he secured a $265 promissory note to Johnson for money and supplies, due Jan. 1, 1873, with a 10-year old mouse-colored mare and the entire crop of cotton to be grown by him that year. Eventually, he was able to acquire a farm of his own, but for some reason it was through his wife: on May 16, 1887, for $200, she purchased 280 acres (east half of southeast quarter, northeast quarter and northeast quarter of northwest quarter, section 31, township 3, range 15) from Leo M. and Martha Massengale. The property lies near the Chickasawhay River, across the county road between Sauenlove and State Highway 18 west of Quitman."

"James was apparently the one who changed the spelling of the family name to Buckelew, and his children and grandchildren followed suit, although some public records continued to use Buckalew."

On 20 July 1854 when James LaFatte was 21, he married Eliza Ann Barnes, daughter of James Barnes (about 1818-) & Mary Unknown (about 1817-), in Clarke Co., MS. Born on 23 November 1837. Eliza Ann died on 14 August 1904; she was 66. Buried in Kings Cem., Elwood Community, Clarke Co., MS. Tombstone: "He took thee from a world of care, An everlasting bliss to share.".

MY great-grandmother, Eliza Ann Barnes, is counted 2 times in 1850 Clarke Co
MS census-once with her parents John and Mary Barnes and once with next door
neighbors--James WOLF(1780 SC) and Nancy (1790 SC).

I have never determined parents of MARY BARNES--but have always thought it
might be some WOLF(e) family or KINGS.

WOLF(e) seem to be tangled in records of AL I have seen.

Jack

They had the following children:
4502 i. Samantha Ann Rebecca (1855-1937)
4503 ii. Jacob Green (1860-1929)
4504 iii. Margaret Jane (1864-1922)
4505 iv. Mary Elizabeth (1866-1871)
4506 v. Martha Jennie (1869-1948)
4507 vi. Peter Corbin (1873-1950)
4508 vii. William Windfield (1876-1963)
4509 viii. James Hardy (1879-1936)
4510 ix. Lester (~1881-)

2623. Sarah Jane Buckalew. Born in 1835 in AL. Sarah Jane died in 1854; she was 19.

As there was no return on her and James N. Huckaby's marriage license, it may not have gone through; yet there are are other cases from Clarke Co., MS, of people living as man and wife despite the lack of a marriage license return. Ministers and justices of the peace were not always conscientious about filing them.

On 26 January 1854 when Sarah Jane was 19, she married James N. Huckaby, son of John Huckaby & Charlotte Peacock, in Clarke Co., MS. Born on 15 May 1831. James N. died on 16 September 1899; he was 68.

2624. Martha Ann Buckalew. Born in 1837 in AL. Martha Ann died in 1865; she was 28.

As there was no return on her and James Morgan Huckaby's marriage license, it may not have gone through; yet there are are other cases from Clarke Co., MS, of people living as man and wife despite the lack of a marriage license return. Ministers and justices of the peace were not always conscientious about filing them.

On 25 July 1854 when Martha Ann was 17, she married James Morgan Huckaby, in Clarke Co., MS.

They had the following children:
4511 i. Ann (1860-1889)
4512 ii. Mary Jane (1862-1954)
4513 iii. Elizabeth (1864-1960)

2625. William H. Buckalew Jr. Born on 6 April 1839 in AL. William H. died on 31 July 1916; he was 77.

1880 Clarke Co., AL, Census.

1900, 16 June; Clarke Co., AL; Census: Living in same house with his son John and family...east of the Mobile & Baltimore Railroad, Choctaw Corner, Thomasville area. [This was the location of Frederick Jackson Buckelew's maternal (Montgomery) ancesters who owned a large farm that, in land records, was named "Choctaw Burn."]

From John Pierce: "...William and Mary Buckelew...lived mostly in Precinct 18, Pleasant Hill, for a time after 1900 they moved to Precinct 21, Choctaw Corner."

On 3 January 1867 when William H. was 27, he married Mary Jane Stephens, in Clarke Co., AL. Born in February 1838 in AL. Mary Jane died on 19 October 1906; she was 68. Buried in Henley Cem., Clarke Co., Fulton, AL.

Henley Cemetery; Fulton, Clarke Co., AL; off Hwy 43, North of Grove Hill, AL.

From John Pierce: "She was nearly 34 years old at the time, an old maid by contemporary standards. The reason may have been that she was jilted by a previous suiter: a marriage license was taken out Mar. 22, 1859 for James Buckaloo and Mary Stephens, but it is marked 'returned, not executed.' James was probably the son of William Buckaloo and Ruth Laramore, born about 1828; he went through with a marriage to Anna Eliza Brewer Dec. 8, 1868."

They had the following children:
4514 i. Lee M. (1870-)

You don't know me but you know Jack Buckelew from Pensacola. Saw him at
Peacock reunion, and on the way there I stopped at UNC Chapel Hill library
wherel almost by accident, I discovered that Manson M. Buckelew and Lourana
Huckaby had moved to Pope County, AR, in 1870's with daughters Lucy and
Saletha, botn born ca. 1867. No doubt somebody can find out if the daughters
married there.

--John J. Pierce

On 8 February 1867 when Manson M. was 24, he married Lourana Huckaby, daughter of John Huckaby & Charlotte Peacock, in Clarke Co., MS. Born about 1838 in AL. Lourana died after 1870; she was 32.

Name elsewhere appears as Luraney, Lurana, Lurenna, etc.

They had the following children:
4519 i. Lucy / Lula Jane (?) (1868-)
4520 ii. Saletha / Letha Jane (?) (1868-)

2628. Samantha Ann Buckalew. Born in 1844 in AL.

2629. Catherine Elizabeth Buckalew. Born about 1847 in AL. At the age of 14, Catherine Elizabeth was baptized in Shiloh Baptist Church, on 25 August 1861.

Unable to determine whether she was daughter of Wm H.'s first or second wife. Could have been of either one, depending on when Annie died.

Helen H. Hahn, genealogist, spelled her name "Catherne".

Marriage record to John Rutledge: Her name is given as "Elizabeth C."

I have in my files another Catherine E. Buckalew born in AL in 1846, daughter of Ezekiel, born in NJ. I think it probable that these Catherines are the same.

I believe that Ezekiel was probably Wm H.'s father and that Catherine went to live as a small child, if not as an infant.

1861, 25 August; minutes (in possession of Martha Huckabee, Uniontown, AL, 10 May 1996) of Shiloh Baptist Church, Marengo County, AL: "Catherine E. Buckloo and Frances A. Huckeby met at the water" and were among those baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church.

"When Elizabeth C. Buckalew married John Rutledge in April 1865, the bondsman was J. M. Huckaby. This is John M. Huckaby, husband of Queen Charlotte Peacock, who was the sister of Annie Peacock, first wife of my William H. Buckalew and the uncle that raised Queen Charlotte Buckelew, daughter of William and Annie P. Buckelew, after Annie's death. (John Pierce has read the original marriage license...) I think this confirms that this Elizabeth is the same as the Catherine/Elizabeth in the Marengo County census with old Ezekiel Buckalew (Mary's People, p. 196, #145 & p. 195, #142 and William H. family, p. 195, # 139. Also check Traces #6, p. 627, #2175. ) I have earlier confirmed that this Charlotte Buckalow in tthe John Huckaby household (1860) was daughter of William H. lBluckelew and sister of (Catherine/Elizabeth) with Ezekiel. Since Shiloh Church minutes show that Cathrine/Elizabeth was baptized in Íhiloh in 1861, I assume that she left Alabama between then and 1865 when she married. Ezekiel and Rachel must have died and somehow, during the War Between the States," she traveled to relatives in Clarke Co., MS." , .

On 29 April 1865 when Catherine Elizabeth was 18, she married John R. Rutledge, son of John Rutledge & Sarah Kelley, in Clarke Co., AL.
