1870 Census shows Mary Elizabeth and Oliver Buckaloo living with Mary Elizabeth's father, Benjamine F. Woulard. This may mean that Plolemy and Mary Elizabeth were separated .

From Sandra Waldrop Doolittle, written 8 June 1995:
"Petallamo (Ptolemey) was born in Washington County in the year of 1842. He was the son of Nancy Beech and John Buckaloo. Ptolemey had two sisters and three brothers.

John Buckaloo
Nancy Beech Buckaloo born 1809
Samira or Semirah Buckaloo born 1835
William Buckaloo born 1841
Elmira Buckaloo born 1846
Morton Buckaloo born 1858

"In the year of 1864, April 29, in Washington County, Alabama, Ptolemey married Mary Elizabeth Woulard. Ptolemey was at the time age 22 and Mary Elizabeth was age 27, born in Washington County,(AL), or Wayne Co. Mississippi. 1870 Census says Alabama. This was the second marriage for Mary Elizabeth Woulard. Mary Elizabeth married William Young Moss in the year of 1853 when she was 16 years old. The marriage lasted for several years; then they went their seperate (sic) ways. We do not know if (there) was any children of the Moss/Woulard marriage. We do know of Ptolemey marriage to Mary Elizabeth. They had two children. The first child was Oliver L. (I think the L. was for Lee because Aunt Fannie, her daughter, named her son Robert Lee and other Oliver. Back then they named their children after family.) Oliver L. Buckaloo was born in the year of 1868. In the year 1870 we think Mary Elizabeth and Ptolemey were seperated because in the 1870 census it shows that Mary Elizabeth and Oliver Buckaloo were living with Mary Elizabeth's father, Benjamine F. Woulard. There is a chance that this Oliver Buckaloo married a Evan Dace/Deas in Wayne Co., Mississippi.

"There was another child born to Mary Elizabeth and Ptolemy in the year 1872. This child was Dora Buckaloo. We do not know if they tried their marriage again and it didn't work. We feel at times that our grandmother could have been the daughter of Buckaloo also. Even though Minnie Lee Masters took the name of her mother's third husband ( There is no marriage records for Mary Elizabeth and a Masters.) . Mary Elizabeth had a child by Masters, Fannie Lucille. She and grandmaw were half sisters. Even though Minnie used the name, it was told by the family that Mary Elizabeth only had one child by Masters. So that means Grandmaw Minnie had to belong to another man outside marriage or she was a Buckaloo, but then again she always said Oliver and Dora Buckaloo were her half sister and brother as well as she said Aunt Fannie was her half sister also. It sounds like Minnie might have been born out of wedlock, for we find three sets of children and two fathers. In 1872 Mary Elizabeth was with child, Dora Buckaloo (Married Swan Johnson) and in 1874 she was with child, Minnie Lee Masters. Then in 1877 she was with child again, Fannie.

"I suppose the marriage didn't last between Ptolemeny and Mary Elizabeth Buckaloo. We feel like Mary Elizabeth moved on and married Masters even though we can not find a marriage record.

"In one of Margie Baxter's letters she writes O.L. (Oliver) married a Eva Dace/Dease in Wayne County 11-18-93. In grandmaw Minnie's Bible she wrote my brother Oliver and my mother Elizabeth died in the same year, 1899. Dora married Swan Johnson in Washington Co. in 1894, Feb. 11.

"Margie came across an interestin (sic) obituary. A lady by the name of Virginai (sic) Buckalew Harrison 6-27-1877 8-14-1976. Virginia's parents were Petallamo Buckalew and Nancy Ponder. There is a Nancy Ponder born 1858 in Alabama. In the Wayne Co., Miss. census. Virginai married a Lewis E. Harrison in Wayne County. Besides Virginia Buckalew and O.L. (male) Buckalew only one other Buckalew is in the 1879-1900 Wayne County census, Miss. Marriage records, that is Agnes who married Edward Odom.

"It begins to look like Mary Elizabeth Woulard and Ptolemey Buckalew divoiced (sic), maybe in Wayne County. Then both remarried there before we have there before we have any surviveing (sic) marriage records.

"Petallamo Buckalew does not (nor Ptolemey) appear on the 1880 census. No marriage record for William Buckalew, born 1844, and Ocie/Oceel Jenning, born 1846-1850, who were the parents of Margie's husband by marriage.

"Petallomo/Ptolemey had a brother, William, born 1840, could be the William above married to Ocie.

"There is a marriage record in Washington County, Alabama, of a William Buckalew on 12-31-1863, to a Susan Beech.

"Even though on all the census they spell the name Buckaloo, when we find Mary Elizabeth, Oliver and Dora, and even Ptolemey, the print out I received from the Mormon Church computor were all spelled Buckaloo. The only thing that bothers me about the "Loo" in Buckaloo is that I found a hundred year old rail road pass, M & O Rail road pass, expired in 1894. The pass was issued to O.L. Buckalew, and grandmaw Minnie's brother was Oliver L. Buckaloo who worked for the M & O rail road. So where does the mistake lie...the census, the pass or where? So was it Buckaloo or was it Buckalew?????

"I wish I could tell you more about Ptolemey Buckaloo/Buckalew other than who his parents were, His sisters and brothers were. Who his first wife was and also who his children were, when he was born, and a child by his second marriage.

"When I change over to Wayne County, Mississipopi, maybe I can find more about him...wills, deeds, etc. It will be hard, for--if Margie Baxter has already combed the area for him, there will not be much left to comb."

1896, Feb 15: "Petolmy T. Buckalew bought 78.77 acres for $5 an acre Feb 15, 1896. Receipt 2990." p.81, "Who Lived Where, Wayne Co., MS"

On 29 April 1864 when Ptolemy/Petalloma (?) was 22, he first married Mary Elizabeth Woulard, daughter of Benjamin F. Woulard , Sr. (1804-1914) & Unity Williford (-1914), in Washington Co., AL. Born about 1837 in Washington Co., AL, Or Wayne Co., MS. Mary Elizabeth died in 1899; she was 62. Nickname: Bettsy.

From State Line, Green Co., MS.

For Mary Elizabeth's children... three sets of children and two fathers. In 1872 Mary Elizabeth was with child Dora Buckaloo and in 1874 she was with child Minnie Lee Masters...in 1877 she was with child again, Fannie.

Descendants feel that Mary Elizabeth married Masters even though a marriage record has not been found.

They had the following children:
4551 i. Oliver Lee (1868-1899)
4552 ii. Dora (1872-)

About 1875 when Ptolemy/Petalloma (?) was 33, he second married Nancy J.. Born about 1855.

They had the following children:
4553 i. Mary A. (~1876-)
4554 ii. Virginia (~1877-)
4555 iii. Ptolemy/Petalloma (?) (~1879-)

2648. Elmira/Elmeria Buckalew. Born in 1846.

2649. Morton Richardson Buckalew. Born in 1858.
