Ninth Generation (Continued)

Family of Milton Marshall Buckalew (1505) & Mary Caroline King

2779. Edward L. Buckalew. Born about 1870.

According to Stokeley Summerfield Buckalew, his brother, Eddie, married Lucy Mitchell (Henry and Butts Counties).
Elizabeth Axton has his name as George Edward Buckalew.

Edward L. married Lucy Mitchell.

They had the following children:
4750 i. William Daughtry
4751 ii. Ada Lois
4752 iii. Myrtice
4753 iv. Horace Millard (1912-1987)

2780. Sallie Harriet Buckalew. Born about 1872.

From Early Marriages of Ga.: Clayton Co. Buckalew, Sallie H. married Robert Hadaway 6-24-1888.
I believe this is Milton M. Buckalew's daughter, Sallie.

See obituary she wrote in June 1903 for Tommie Buckalew, child of her brother, Stokeley Buckalew.

On 24 June 1888 when Sallie Harriet was 16, she married Robert Hadaway, in Clayton Co., GA.

2781. Fannie Wanna Buckalew. Born on 25 November 1874.

2782. Stokeley Summerfield Buckalew. Born on 2 December 1879 in RFD, Henry Co., Georgia. Stokeley Summerfield died in Brightmore Nurs., Griffin, Spalding Co., Georgia, on 19 May 1961; he was 81. Buried in City Cem., Griffin, Spalding Co., Georgia.

Mamie Corinne (Trammell) Buckalew, wife of Clifford Cornelius Buckalew and my (Les Buckalew) mother, wrote the following in the family copy of the book "Leaves of Gold":

"When Granddaddy Buckalew(Stokeley Summerfield) was ten years old, Grandma Caroline (King) Buckalew, Aunt Annie and Uncle Eddie lived on Charlie Bryant's place at Ola, GA, just east of McDonough, GA. Caroline's mother lived near Locust Grove, GA. S.S. and Grandma rode in a road cart from Ola to Locust Grove. Grandma went home with them and spent a week.

"In the King family there was a sister, Lou Ann. She married Bob Dorden (...ten?). Grandma Caroline had eight brothers. All went to the Civil War. Only one, Uncle Frank, came home after the war. (Check Mack Dorden, Griffin, GA.)

"Caroline King married Milton Buckalew who lived to be 70 years old and died at Riverdale, GA. He is buried in Bethsadia Baptist Church cemetery. Caroline and Milton had two sons, Eddie and Stokely Summerfield, and two girls, Sallie and Annie.

"Grandpa Milton, by a previous marriage, had Jim, Lula and Fanny.
"Eddie Buckalew married Lucy Mitchell (Henry and Butts Counties). Born to this union was Doughtry Buckalew (an Atlanta) barber), Ada Lois and Myrtice who married Douglas Yancey (Covington, GA), and Deanie, Esma, Millie and Bernice.

"Stokely Summerfield Buckalew married Susan Lester in 1900 on 5 Dec. To their union was born Tommy, who was born in 1901 and died in 1903, Clifford Cornelius Buckalew was born on 18 Oct 1903, Clarabelle who was born 25 Aug 1905, Mary who was born on 7 Nov 1907, Etta Mae who was born 15 July 1909, James Stokeley who was born 15 Aug 1912, and Lillian who was born 27 July 1916. Susan (Lester) Buckalew died 8 Aug 1916 and was buried at Turners Methodist Church in Henry County, East of McDonough, GA.

"On 20 July 1919, Stokeley Buckalew married Texanna Vernon in Henry County, GA. To their union was born Paul Elijah (28 June 1921, Morrow, GA), Fred Horace (12 Sep 1922, Rex, GA), Homer Harold (25 April 1925), Mattie Ruth (18 Jan 1927), and Howard Lee (29 Nov 1930). The three last children were born in Griffin, GA.

"Paul gave his life in line of duty to his country in Belgium in the 'Battle of the Bulge' on 21 Jan 1945. His body was brought back to this country and is resting in the National Cemetery in Marietta, GA.

"Stokeley S. Buckalew died in Griffin, GA, 19 May 1967. He lived with Clifford C. and Corinne Buckalew Oct 1965 until March 1966.

"Granddaddy Stokeley Summerfield Buckalew enlisted in the U. S. Army at Arabi, GA, on 16 June 1898 at 18.5 years and 14 days old. His father, Milton Buckalew, was born in 1819 and died at seventy years of age in 1888. Stokely was born in 1879 and was only nine years old when his father died."

Lived in Henry Co., GA, early.

Granddaddy told me (Lester Trammell Buckalew) that he worked on the ice wagon in Cuba. I assume that meant that he was responsible for carrying ice from the port to the troops.

In November of 1962 Stokeley Summerfield Buckalew gave Lester Trammell Buckalew, his grandson, the following information: Stokeley's father, Milton M. Buckalew, came from Ireland to the USA at age of sixteen years. He died in 1887 at the age of 69 years which would establish the year of his birth about 1818. The year of his immigration would then be approximately 1834. Stokeley Buckalew was born in 1879 and died in May of 1966. He was only eight years old when his father died. Because of his youthfulness, he had few memories of information that his father may have given to him about his family."

My latest research seems to indicate that the young Stokeley either misunderstood what his Dad had told him about his (Milton's) arrival in this country, or else, for unknown reason, Milton chose to misrepresent his origins. I have established a tentative line from Scotland to NJ to VA to SC to Georgia. I believe that Stokeley's great grandfather was one of the ones to leave NJ and make his way to GA through VA and SC.

On 5 December 1900 when Stokeley Summerfield was 21, he first married Susan Virginia Lester, daughter of George D. Lester (6 June 1826-19 June 1906) & Mary Elizabeth Cathy (23 March 1838-25 May 1907), in Henry County, Georgia. Born in June 1876. Susan Virginia died in Tussahaw, Henry Co., GA, on 6 August 1916; she was 40. Buried on 8 August 1916 in Turners Meth Ch, Henry Co., GA. Nickname: Susie.

1916, Aug 11; Henry County Weekly, Obituary:

"Mrs. Stokeley Buckalew dies at the home in Tussahaw last Sat night. She leaves a husband and several small children, several brothers and sisters. Remains laid to rest at Turner's Church Mon."

Same date and publication; Union Grove Column: Mention of "death of Mr. S. S. Buckalew's wife who died at the home in Tussahaw, leaving 2 (sic) small children, the youngest 10 days old. She was 42 yrs old and a member of the Bapt. Church since she was 14."

They had the following children:

On 20 July 1919 when Stokeley Summerfield was 39, he second married Texanna Vernon. Buried in City Cem, Griffin, Spalding Co., Georgia.

They had the following children:
4762 i. Paul Elijah (1921-1945)
4763 ii. Fred Horace (Private)
4764 iii. Homer Harold (Private)
4765 iv. Mattie Ruth (Private)
