Masami Teraoka - A contemporary Japanese artist working with traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock iconography, but with a contemporary twist. This watercolour, Giesha and Skeleton, is from a series dealing with AIDS. The juxtapositioning of traditional and contemporary imagery creates a compelling effect. His exhibition runs until January 25th. Visit the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco for more pictures and information.
The Asian Art Museum is the largest of its kind in the West. The Teraoka exhibition is the first the museum has held of a contemporary Asian artist. Visit their website for information and photos of upcoming and past exhibitions.

August Rodin: I first discovered Rodin while in high school, flipping through some books at the library. It was an incredible moment. He was the main impetus for me taking up sculpture myself, and my style was naturally very influenced by him. Click for more information and photos.
Kathe Kollwitz: I was fortunate enough to while in Berlin to visit the Kathe Kollwitz Museum, an intimate building housing most of her prints and drawings. It was certainly one of the most moving art-viewing experiences I've had. Click for more information on this incredible artist.
George Tooker: One of his paintings, Voice 2, is still the image which comes immediately to mind for me when thinking about Magic Realism. It was used as a cover for Alberto Manguel's anthology of fantastic literature, Blackwater. Click for more information and photos of this huanting and extraordinary painter.
