[From: Kira Yakimovich, Edmonton, Canada, Coordinator]

For anyone who wants posters, I have designed 3 that are available for your use at:

http://walk.bijouenhancements.com/coordinators/

[PRODOS: Approved as authorised WalkForCapitalism material]

Please send a reply to the email on the page saying which poster(s) you have downloaded.

Clear thoughts.

[PRODOS: Lovely work Kira!]

I don't want to impose a single layout/format of the Bernstein Declaration flyer.

However, Rosemary has been nice enough to create a version which can be used for any American city and has made it available to anyone who wants it - you can just fill in the name of your city in the blank rectangle.

Check it out, it's terrific!

Go to http://WalkForCapitalism.ORG/saratogasprings , enter, and look under "Additional Links" near the bottom of the page.

On that page, Rosemary writes:
"Download tri-fold flyer for WalkForCapitalism. (Note: Print page 1 of the flyer and then print page 2 on the back and tri-fold the sheet. Fill in the box with your city's information, or let me know you would like a .pdf file for your city and I will create one for you.)"

Does it get better than that?
Thanks Rosemary!

How are you going to do this?  I'm interested too in giving out fliers at universities near the area of the walk, and I'm unfamiliar with the best way to do it.  Are you planning to go to the campus during class time and hand them out from a table by the student union, for example?

[From Starchild]

Dear freedom lovers,

Rosemary Gately's mention of the U.S. flag got me motivated to design an international flag for capitalism! The image is of the torch of liberty creating a dollar sign and by its heat causing it to break from a link of chains. Hopefully you get that general idea comes by looking at it, but I'm not very good at illustration. So please consider this an inspirational rough draft for someone else's more proficient final rendering. Feel free to use, reproduce and tinker with the flag as you see fit, all I request is credit for the basic design if anyone asks.

It could be argued that the dollar sign is still an American symbol, but I was thinking of it more in the sense that pro-capitalist novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand adopted it as a symbol of capitalism and freedom. The torch  also has a certain connection to the U.S. via the Statue of Liberty, but the idea of a flame signifying freedom is kind of universal I think. It is among other things the symbol of the Olympics, an international competition based on merit.

[Regarding American symbols - see Prodos' post about the use of the American flag.]

I created this in Adobe Illustrator 5.5 on the Macintosh and saved and attached it as an EPS file, which was pretty much the only other file choice given. I hope that's an easier format to view, but I'm fairly ignorant about tech stuff like that so I could be wrong. If this proves to be a problem and anyone else knows a better way to upload it, please let me
know.

Yours in liberty

There is a pile of graphic art tasks that need to be done.  I am setting up the CapitalismGraphicArtists Team.

Would you like to join?

The way it works is that when there's a task needed to be done, I send a note out and ask if anyone would like to do it. Exactly as with the CapitalismWebmasters Team.

Most urgently, the translations of Bernstein Declaration need to be formatted and made into .pdf for downloading.

Also some more flyers and posters need to be designed.

Most urgently, a set of flyers consisting of pro capitalism quotes by: Adam Smith, John Locke, Von Mises, Ayn Rand, Bastiat, and the Founding Fathers need to be designed.

Also, from time to time, one of the coordinators may need some help with graphic design.

You may design the various items pretty much your own way.  And you are welcome, if you wish, to include a small note such as "designed by ....." or "graphic art by ...." on anything you design.

There are also other fancier tasks. And, of course, I always welcome your ideas.

Please write back to me as soon as you can if you'd like to join the CapitalismGraphicArtists Team.

Thanks!

Ready for some fun?

How would you like to join my new team which searches the web to find FREEBIES being offered by companies
so that we can use them as PRIZES for volunteers and coordinators?

I'm setting up a series of fun "competitions" with prizes (in the form of FREEBIES) for coordinators and volunteers, for performing certain tasks or simply in recognition of tasks carried out.

A special web page will be set up listing the winners, what they did to win, and what they won.

This is what it might look like:

Name: Albert Bricklayer, coordinator for Wangharatta
Task: Sent out media release within 5 days
Prize: Silk stockings [Picture of prize and link to freebie provider]

Name: Jordan Didgeridoo, Rose Park
Task: Was one of the first 10 to invite a local politician to participate
Prize: CD on playing golf [Pic and link]

Name: Samantha Pumpkin, Gablesville
Task: Organised public debate on Capitalism
Prize: Movie Star poster [Pic and link]

Name: Karl Xram, Manlyfesto
Task: Mentored a coordinator on handling radio interviews
Prize: Romance novel [Pic and link]

We know how under Capitalism businesses compete for your money. But did you realise that under Capitalism businesses also compete to provide you with the best freebies!?

There are countless free samples, subscriptions, software, etc. available. Just look at the free web hosting services. I have been using Bravenet.com websites for the campaign websites. But they've been experiencing problems lately so I just switched to GeoCities.com for the newest cities to come online!

This is the sort of thing that you are unlikely to find in Iran, and other non-capitalist or anti-capitalist countries, true?

More Freedom = More Freebies!

So if you enjoy fun and games and would like to work with me to locate good freebies and/or help me design games and opportunities to use those freebies as prizes, please write to me as soon as you can.

This is Capitalism at work - at its most outragreously delightful best!

Please write to me to join up: prodos@prodos.com

And  you may even get a free can of soup or a plastic dinosaur out of it! ;-)

[From: Scott Powell, Toronto Coordinator]

Greetings all:

As an example of a promotional tool we're using in Toronto, I've attached a PDF template for WalkforCapitalism business cards.

[Individuals wishing to get that PDF template are welcome to send an e-mail to Scott Powell - <powell_sd@hotmail.com>. Or perhaps could Scott upload it to a website?]

A small group of us walk planners held a counter-protest to a grotesque anti-capitalist rally in Toronto recently, and we distributed these cards to business people in the financial core of the city. As a result we got some media attention and had a significant increase in sign-ups for our local mailing list.

There's something about them being _business_ cards that really rings right, but I think the best thing about the attached file is that anyone can take it, print it off at home, and cut a bunch of cards for themselves.  This way, anyone who wants to can carry a little promotional tool for the walk in his wallet!  As the double-blue ribbons we wear start to attract attention, I think they will prove invaluable.

My wife and I were trying to decide what phone number to give out to strangers and public and media for the local (St. Louis) WalkForCapitalism and decided on a solution that may work for you too.

My daughter's softball team uses a Hotline that works very efficiently: if a practice time is changed, a game is rained out, which uniform combination for Saturday's tournament, etc., the information is put on the Hotline and every team member calls it to get info and/or to leave a message for the coach. The message can be changed (with a passcode) from any phone, anytime; likewise, the coach can check messages from anywhere, anytime.

We decided to apply the same principle for the Walk and for only $10 a month, I set up the "St. Louis WalkForCapitalism Hotline." (That's cheap enough to keep it up and running all year! But you just keep it and pay for it month by month.)

Now I can leave whatever message I want, update the message daily (or hourly) as our plans evolve, get names and numbers of callers who want a call back, etc. all without tying up our home numbers [...] or an office line [...] or my mobile phone.

The company I used [...] is called: American Voice Mail, in Los Angeles (310-478-4949). They set you up instantly, over the phone ... for the promise of a check within a week, they have a local (to you) phone number/Hotline/voicemail working within a few hours. (They operate out of eighty-something cities, I think the man said.)

By the way, if you set one up, and mention who you were referred by and their voicemail number, they get a month free ... hint, hint :-)

The St. Louis WalkForCapitalism Hotline is 314-994-1103.

Also could someone please help me out with the St. Louis website? Thank you.

[From: Hubert Jongen]

Just a little second thought.

I am very PRO-AMERICA.

But I would not emphasize "AMERICA" as being the only country where there is capitalism by waving American flags.

[...]
There are other countries that have SOME capitalism, just like the USA

I personally think it would be better to keep "nations" flag away from the walk and stress that Capitalism IS a _ WORLD_WIDE _  philosophy. (Exception: American flags can of course be used in the USA).

Friends, I am looking forward to your comments!

Q: "Can the Capitalism Award be presented posthumously?"

This question was sent to me by Mikhail Ramendik, our Moscow coordinator.

Reply:

Nominations for the Award must be alive at the time of nomination. Thus, great historic figures and past heroes of Capitalism are excluded.

The reason for this is that the Awards are a form of activism i.e. they seek to change perceptions and actions.

They do this by drawing attention to the principles and the spirit of Capitalism. They provide concrete examples of Capitalist principles in action - in human form.

i.e. "Here is an example of what we mean. Here is an individual and his or her work. It is worthy and wonderful, is it not?"

We all know how powerful role models and examples are.

The Awards process, the nominations, and the recipients also provide media opportunities i.e. opportunities to present our message, to uphold our principles and explain their value. They are a chance to communicate with the public, to put our ideas up for public scrutiny and, very importantly, to put Capitalism "on the agenda."

"On the Agenda" is one of my favourite strategies.  It is different from argument, debate, and persuasion - though
often a prelude to it.

"On the Agenda" means "Please include this in your thinking."  It doesn't ask for agreement. It simply invites the other person to at least give some thought to a particular idea - whether it's an invention, a suggestion, or a possibility. Once an idea is "On the Agenda" the other person can make up their own mind about it. Since such a process favours rational ideas and rational people it's half the battle won!

Consider also the EFFECT of the Annual International Capitalism Awards.  What they do is institutionalise and entrench a positive perception of Capitalism and its champions. They help the community SHIFT their focus from all the horrid, contemptible lies and utter rot of the anti capitalists to focusing on the magnificent, constructive benefits all of us (including the aforementioned idiots and hypocrites) gain from Capitalism.

The combination of the Capitalism Awards and Capitalism Day will, I believe, in the next couple of years generate everything from school projects to radio and TV debates, from commercial merchandise to festivals. I'll talk more about all that and invite your participation in some of the anticipated and planned developments - after D2.

Nominating and presenting the Award to the living also means that the principles and champions of Capitalism are alive and well - and on your doorstep. Yes! We have real life heroes all around us Walking the Talk!

The Capitalism Award is also a form of much needed Justice.

Justice means "granting to each man that which he deserves."  Ayn Rand referred to Capitalism as "The Unknown Ideal"  Is it not also true that our Creators and Producers have, tragically, been the Forgotten Men and Women of the world?

But not any longer.

Henceforth our mission will be to "seek and reward"  these giants of virtue and value.

What a beautiful world it can be.

Rather than e-mail everyone with the business card PDF I went ahead and has it put on the web, since that was where it was headed anyways.

The Toronto Walk website is at:

Follow the "planning website" link to get to the download option.

I shall be working on some images over the next three weeks for fliers to hand out on D2. I will scan and pass these onto you for feedback. If there are other artists out there getting involved,I'd like to hear about any ideas you may have.

Best regards,

Hello, capitalists world-wide!

A simple way to promote the Walk for Capitalism is with your e-mail signature.

In Toronto, we're also handing out the Walk business cards everywhere. Hundreds of individuals have received a card already, and we're printing thousands more and giving them to anyone who's interested in promoting the walk.

Excitement is growing in Toronto!

If your country has any official documents which [recognize] citizens individual rights, then you might call attention to those in a banner.  For example (in the US) "The Bill of Rights" would look good along side a US flag.

Another general slogan I have seen that I really like, is "Small Government is Beautiful", which was used by Carla Howell in her US Senate campaign last year (http://www.carlahowell.org/main.htm).  She may have some rights to it though, at least in the USA.

[Tym Parsons, Seattle Coordinator wrote:]

We have also been struggling with this issue and have decided that, since it is a symbolic gesture, we would tie the ribbons on, say what we are going to say, take pictures, etc., then take the ribbons off again and proceed to the next place, thus not leaving anything behind to cause concern. Another year when perhaps apprehensions lessen about what we are doing, we might be able to go a little further with this.

I have not asked Prodos for an OK on this, but trust he will intervene here and let us know where he weighs in on this.

Carla Howell owns the Standard Mark to that phrase- so it cannot be used without her permission. [...] So, if any walk were to use that phrase, it would most likely be connected with her. She is running for governor of Massachusetts this year, and that is again her campaign slogan. As the Walk doesn't endorse any political party, it would be a good idea not to use that slogan. However, I would suggest that the Walk organizers in Boston contact Ms. Howell and Mr. Cloud and ask them to participate in the walk. They will likely bring lots of supporters and media attention to the walk. And they are definitely Pro-Capitalist. [...]

[From: Symons Jerome, Adelaïde Coordinator]

Hello defenders of capitalism,

In Adelaide we would like to have a Walk for Capitalism t-shirt. However, the number of walkers we will have will be quite small, making the cost of the t-shirts high.

Does anyone know of a way to make a small number of t-shirts for a low cost?

Alternatively, could coordinators from many cities band together to make a generic t-shirt, so that the number of t-shirts is high and the cost per unit low?

www.CafePress.com  If you want a small number of custom t-shirts, this is the way to go!

[From: Sydney Kendall]

[Jerome Symons wrote: Does anyone know of a way to make a small number of t-shirts for a low cost? ]

I just put *custom t-shirts* in the Yahoo search engine and it gave me a long, long list of custom t-shirt addresses. I only checked one out: http://www.abctees.com/

They do a minimum of 12 shirts per design. It normally takes two weeks, but for an additional fee they can get it done in 3 days. The fee depends on what kind of job you want done -- you have to ask them, so I don't know whether you can get an inexpensive order out of this company or not. They have an in-house creative art staff, but also a large selection of clipart designs. If you want to send in your own designs artwork should be camera ready, color separated and full size.

But that's just the one search result. The engine claims to have turned up 163 sites.

There's also the alternative of getting an iron-on inkjet transfer kit, but the quality isn't great, and it takes a lot of time, heat, and a lot of pushing down hard on an iron on top of formica. Not really fun

[From: Mary Lou Gutscher]

Some tips on finding and buying double blue ribbons:

Try the Yellow Pages under Ribbons. (Thanks for the idea)

Ask for standard sizes rather than specifying a specific width of ribbon. We started asking for 3" ribbon, most did not have any, those who did wanted $11 a metre!

Ask for Royal Blue and Baby Blue - both standard colour names.

We got 1 1/2" ribbon for about $15 for 50 metres. That was enough for all of our Double Blue Awards. I phoned, gave a credit card number and had a courier pick them up. Easy. Quick. Not too expensive.
