This is the title
of an article from the noteworthy book by
G.Grammatikakis, teacher and former Dean (1990-
1996) in the department
of Physics in University of Crete
In a depth of 4
kilometers off Pylos, near Sapienza, in the
deepest waters of the Mediterranean Sea, a twelve
storey astrophysics laboratory will be installed.
Its purpose will be to detect a special particle
by the name of Neutrino. In 1931 astrophysicist
Paulli predicted its existence, that is that the
particle is a by product of a nuclear reaction.
25 years later Paulli's prediction is verified in
the lab.
The neutrino is doomed to run at the speed of
light, something that does not really exist, in
zero or almost zero mass and no electrical
charge.
There is no obstacle that will hold it back or
absorb it. Millions of neutrinos are going
through u's to the other end of the earth on
their inconceivable journey in space. They are
the moving history records of the Universe from
the beginning of its creation to this day.
They can provide, if detected, all the
information of all stellar happenings as far as
the outer edge of the Universe. This detection ,
however, requires a new kind of telescope like
the one now being tested in Pylos. There are
similar telescopes under the ice on the North
Pole and in the depths of Lake Vaikal.
Great depth is essential in absorbing cosmic
radiation and thus allowing the neutrinos only to
reach that peculiar telescope. The ambitious aim
of programme Nestor is to capture high energy
neutrinos that come from the mysterious Quasars
and the black holes, which may exist in the
center of galaxies.
The
telescope
This
particular telescope is a twelve storey tower ,
higher than the Eiffel Tower. The floor of each
storey is hexagon shaped in every corner of which
are sensitive light multipliers. If a neutrino
reacts with water atoms it is detected and the
information is transferred to the center of the
hexagon where there is a titanium sphere. Inside
it are complex electronic systems that receive
the signals and channel them through optic fibers
to the programme monitoring center , where
computer
systems do the processing and the extraction of
results.
Wise Nestor
king of Pylos provides the meeting point of myth
and science giving his name to the acronym of
Nestor programme which means NEutrinos from
Supernova To Oceanic Regions
