Regards Abbas Jaffer Acting Moderator - ABDG-A. ................................................................ Question I know that papers that have the name of God, or Ahlul Bayt on them cannot be burnt. We can either throw them in the sea (water) or bury them. My question is what about recycling? Especially since recycling does not include burning the paper. ................................................................ Answer Another method is by shredding the paper into tiny pieces and then disposing of it, so long as this does not entail disrespect (hatk). (Ayat. Khu'i, "Ath-Thaqafat-ul-Islamiyyah, p. 22) I do not have a fatwa on the issue of recycling, however there are hints given in the legal rulings of the jurists in other areas to reach a tentative conclusion that it would be permissible, so long as it does not constitute a sign of disrespect or dishonor to the sacred personages or to Allah (s.w.t.). For example, Ayat. Khamena'i finds it objectionable (ishkal) to through away paper that is partly blank and can be made use of. (Ayat. Khamena'i, "Durar-ul- Qawa'id . . ." p. 135). Thus, recycling, in all probability would be permissible. wa bi-l-laahi-t-tawfiq, Hamid Mavani
