So what is a Book of Shadows?

A Book of Shadows is essentially a workbook which contains rituals or ritual structures, spells, thoughts, musings, gathered knowledge, invocations and observations relating to the magickal workings of a witch. Some people keep their BoS in glorious notebooks with fantastic covers. Others have their BoS in a looseleaf binder, or bits of paper slung together in a folder, or a school notebook. Some keep them only on their computer. I personally believe that a BoS should be written in your own hand and if you want to put it into your computer later, that's fine. I like the process of hand writing my BoS because it connects me to the words and images much more. What you do after that is up to you. I call my BoS Lilitu's Book of Shadows and Lights to reflect the diversity of its content. Others may call their BoS a Grimoire.

A BoS may belong to an individual or to a coven, grove or proto-nest. I have both the writings from a BoS of a coven to which I belonged, and also my own. In my own BoS&L I copy bits and pieces from friends, books and from the net that I find useful, as well as rituals, spells and potions that I create myself. On my BoS&L pages I'll only include things I have written myself or with others or knowledge which is generic such as colour charts, circle casting and so on. Where bits have been borrowed, they will be indicated.

If you wish to try anything on these pages, please feel to do so. However, if you perform any ritual in a public place, or place it in your own BoS, please make a note of where it came from. If you want to talk about any part of my BoS&L with me, please e-mail me. I would enjoy discussing it with you.
