Creating
Sacred Space for
Magickal Work

It's very important to ensure that the place where you work your magick is free of negative vibrations. You don't have to caste a full circle to work magick, but it's good to at least have a special place where you can go to be alone and undisturbed. In our house, for example, we have one room dedicated to meditation, ritual, healing and workshops. Here is a short and simple ritual for creating a sacred space for magickal or healing work in your home or other indoor place. The directions I have used are for the southern hemisphere. If you live in the northern hemisphere, just swap things around.

Performing magick in the open air is wonderful if you can do it, especially if you can create your magick at night, under the light of the moon and stars. If you can find a quiet place outside where you will not be disturbed, this is, in my opinion, preferable. If you need to work inside, make sure you will not be interrupted.

Use some incense or burn some herbs to cleanse the room of negativity and unwanted vibrations. Use a cleansing herb or incense such as: frankincense, sandalwood, sagebush*, cedar leaves, lavender, eucalyptus or sweetgrass. I prefer to burn my herbs on charcoal, but if that isn't possible, use an incense stick or cone. Walk three times around the room, counter-clockwise, asking for all negativity to leave and for only the positive to remain. Take the incense with you as you walk around. Then repeat the process, sprinkling salt and water around the room, and again, using a besom (broom) to sweep the negativity away. You can light a white candle as you do this if you wish. As you are walking your circle, put all of your focus and energy into creating positive and healing vibrations in the room.

Once you have completed this first part of your cleansing, you can set up a place to work, before you begin your magick. (Some people may want to cast a full circle instead of just my short ritual, so see the circle casting page.)

To set up a place at which to work, have a table or other stable surface on which to create your altar, using whatever special things you wish. Place this altar in the south of the room if at all possible, or in the centre if it is not. On the altar you can put special crystals, shells, statues, photos, feathers or whatever small objects are sacred to you. Just make sure you leave yourself enough space to work when you need to. You have now created sacred space. Perform your magick or rituals with perfect love and perfect trust.

Face south as you perform your magick. I like to mix my oils and brews at my altar, or even write special letters that require some extra energy. Often I will sit at the altar for meditation, especially if there is some deep question I need to answer or ponder. Cleanse your sacred space every so often to keep the energy clean and clear. So mote it be.
