Why? Why did I pick a KLR650? The Story...

It had been 12 years since my last bike. I had a tough time deciding on what to get. I narrowed it down to a bunch of used bikes: Yamaha RD350LC, KZ750 or another CB900F SuperSport. The drawback with all of these bikes was that I would be confined to the road with the usual assortment of crazy stressed-out Toronto motorists.

I then decided a street-legal dirt-bike would be the way to go. I spent several hours searching the Net and stumbled across the bike above. It offered a huge gas tank, a big liquid-cooled "thumper" double overhead cam engine and seemed perfect for a bit of off-road "bushwhacking". The 35" seat height was also a bonus for my 38" inseam. The bike first came out in 1987 and has since earned a loyal following.

After surfing through a KLR web-ring, it seemed clearly evident that a lot of people really loved this bike.

Two days later, I phoned my insurance company to get the low-down. I was informed that they would insure a bike for me as long as
1) it was not over 750 cc's,
2) it was not a Harley and
3) it was not a high-performance/racer model.

Two hours later, I phoned my local Kawasaki dealer to check on the availability of this green monster. I was informed that they did not have any and it was rumoured that the production was stopped or something like that. My heart sank. The voice at the other end of the phone sensed my disappointment and informed me to hang on... he'd check around. Half an hour later, he called me back and said he had tracked one down.

"I'll take it!", I heard myself say...

Be sure to check out the pathetic work of Ed Runions and Jason Runions of “Wet Paint” aka “Wet Paint And Design” aka “Runions Home Renovations” as they attempted to paint a house (and failed miserably)...

Painters from hell!! Take me to hell!!
