My favorite film of all. I have watched Mona Lisa many times, and each viewing tells me something more about the characters. Bob Hoskins is astounding as a man just trying for some emotional contact, whether it be with his estranged daughter (Zoe Nathanson), the call girl he drives for (Cathy Tyson), or the mobster he took a fall for (Michael Caine).
Director Neil Jordan used the same basic plot again in "The Miracle" and "The Crying Game". While I enjoyed both, neither do it for me like this one does. There is a scene, near the end of the movie, on the board walk where Hoskins, having just become aware of Tyson's secret (in all three movies the femme fatale has a secret the revelation of which tears up the protaganist), bares himself in a way which chokes me up every time.
