To Live and Die in Hell

You may hate us in death as you do in life. You may revile us and cast us aside with all the contempt you can muster. However, in the end, more than any others, we are the coin by which this nation is defined. For until the last of these dissident sons freely rejoins you and his service is honored by the one who hates him most, this nation shall remain a house divided.

Camp Douglas through the eyes of the Sixteenth

The prisons of the War Between the States were forerunners of the concentration camps of the next century. While conditions were difficult in the south for everyone, cities of plenty like Chicago could boast some of the worse camps ever constructed. While Sherman was burning Atlanta and the people of Georgia starved like the men at Andersonville, nothing of the sort could be said for the people of Chicago. .

Most of the men of the Sixteenth found themselves just there, in Chicago, home of Camp Douglas or at equally as infamous Rock Island. They also found themselves in Camp Chase, Johnson's Isle, Fort Delaware, Camp Morton, and at Point Lookout, far afield for mountain men captured at Atlanta and Franklin.

Perhaps the most chilling thought about the camps was not the total disregard for life; rather it was the total disregard for the sanctity of death. Little attention was paid in most places to correct marking of the graves and little has been paid since. The dead from Camp Morton were moved about in death as they had been in life... unknown, uncared for, and completely forgotten and there was no army of invasion to contend with in the north.

Today at Point Lookout, the Federal Government continues to hold them in contempt for it refuses to allow the presentation of the flag they served under at the cemetery. Only the naive and foolish believe the war is over, it will only end when all those who respect these men are wiped from the earth, the southern cross burned and the ashes buried and the monuments to those who loved or served that flag torn down and plowed under.... Even then the north will continue to pour salt.... For the tyrant must be vigilant… and liberty was struck down in 1865, not slavery. For if we are really free, then I too am free... to believe just that... and to be respected for the belief.

My home library, the Greenville County Library, has many books about Andersonville, the sole holding about the prisons of the north is one in print and two on microfilm. This is the saddest commentary of all... for how can you claim fair play if you do not possess fair memory.

For More Reading, see the following: Levy, George: To Die in Chicago, Confederate Prisoners at Camp Douglas, 1862-1865.

Don't forget to check out the links to the Prison Camps as well.
